Asperger Syndrome Support Group
Asperger syndrome - also referred to as Asperger's syndrome, Asperger's, Aspergers or just AS - is one of five neurobiological pervasive developmental disorders (PDD), and is characterized by deficiencies in social and communication skills, normal to above normal intelligence, and standard language development.
This is sort of a random question about general autism/less about Asperger's. Along with the riddance of "Asperger's Syndrome" by DSM, are they also getting rid of PDD-NOS and then categorizing that as an ASD too?
My little cousin was diagnosed Tourette's syndrome, but that is all. He is extremely talkative, and repeats people's phrases. He sticks them in conversations even if they don't fit with the context of what's being talked about.
He is 11 years old, but he acts like he's about 6. He went to a story time for pre-schoolers and loved it (age 10 at the time). Although he is developmentally delayed socially, he is right where he should be academically. He may struggle a tiny bit, but nothing serious. Could this be PDD (or now part of ASD)? I don't know much about how he would be classified.
We questioned whether or not he could be Aspie, but he is way too social and doesn't really have a narrow topic of interest. Are there very social people with autism that are just inappropriate? He loves to interact with people, but he is very inappropriate. For example: he would go up to people at our gym locker room and pat their bellies and tell them they had a big belly (and he was at the age where most kids would know not to do this...I think he was 8?).
He is now starting to hit puberty and asked a friend of his mother's if she would like to have sex with him. It was in fact, a very funny story...but nonetheless, inappropriate. He didn't mean harm, he just doesn't understand A. What sex really is and B. that you NEVER ask someone that question...especially a stranger 4 times your age.
Another thing to note, is that he is home schooled and so he's not socialized as much as other children who go to regular schooling. The reason that makes me think it doesn't have anything to do with home schooling is because he has two younger sisters who have no problems with socialization. The little sister who is about to turn 7 is already "passing him up" in terms of maturity.
Thoughts anyone? PDD? Autism? Asperger's? Or something completely different?

Please keep in mind that all these conditions are neurologically based so many of the symptoms cross over each other--making it almost impossible to get a proper DX. This is the same situation with my son--he has many symptoms of many disorders but not enough of the criterias of one specific except for DCD/Dyspraxia. Since he borederlines Aspie we have been told to consider it because as he ages he may show more of the symptoms, if not then it will be dismissed from his list of possible disorders.
Have see a speech language pathologist for an evaluation, I think it would benefit him.
I watched a wonderful movie on lifetime or hallmark about a man with Tourrettes--It was so inspiring--I loved it--it's called head In front of the class--He went on to be a school teacher!!!!!!
