I haven't bought a dress in YEARS. Like. I don't know. A decade? No joke. I have a few long hippie dippy skirts that I love, but I need a for realsies dress to wear to the 40th anniversary party for my husband's parents. They are going all out for this party and I really don't want to show up under dressed.

I have some serious problems, though.


First: I have no idea of what sort of dress would be most flattering. I'm short and ... fluffy? Not *fat* per se (Ok maybe a little fat) so I'm guessing I need to sort of take notice off my not-exactly-firm arms and my-less-than-tight tummy. Let's put it this way: 5'3" and size 12. (ouch.) Can I even get away with a dress at this point? *sigh* (Hello, just hand me a burlap bag and a belt and we'll call it good.)

I've heard "empire waist" and "baby doll style" tossed around but I only vaguely know what that means.

Second: I don't even know where to buy dresses. We live in a very rural area so as far as going somewhere to buy dresses, it means driving an hour or two away to get to "real" stores (something besides Walmart/Kmart.) I don't mind making the drive, but I'd like to have some clue of where I'm looking.

Can anyone help in /any/ way?

I am also fluffy. Fluffier than you :) I would say first you need excellent underwear - suck it in and smooth it out. Wear something with sleeves if you are worried about arms.
Personally, I feel a lot more comfortable in really nice dress pants and a blouse. We have a few excellent plus sized clothing shops and the ladies that work there are really helpful. Take an honest friend along too. Check out what shops are around before your drive. I'm pretty sure you won't find what you need at Walmart. I used to buy Walmart clothes. But I would feel like I was wearing Walmart clothes. To feel like a million bucks, you will need to spend the money and invest the effort for something fancier than Walmart can offer. Good luck :)

Hey... that isn't that fluffy! JcPenney usually has nice dresses this time of year for easter. Also, check out the Spanx undergarments that pull in and smooth everything.
I personally think empire and baby-doll styles only look good on really skinny women cause the rest of us look pregnant in them!
Try on a bunch of dresses... I personally like a waist, it makes us curvier women look more voluptous (sp?) rather than frumpy.
BTW, I was 5' 2" and size 16 before dday... that is chubby. Now I am size 10 and feeling really skinny! Only silver lining of this.

I am 5' 3 and also a size 12.

Oh I just realized that you said you are a size 12. No plus size shops for you! The dresses in your links are beautiful Lotus!

    My 6mo twin DD's are EBF and just started rice cereal on the first. Everything has been going fine except this morning one of them had a diaper rash (lots of redness around her anus). I read this as one of the signs of an allergy. BUT I did just buy a different brand diaper yesterday (which they have used randomly before w/no issues). Do you think its the cereal or the diaper?
