Arnold-Chiari Malformation Support Group
Arnold-Chiari malformation, sometimes referred to as 'Chiari malformation' or ACM, is a congenital anomaly of the brain. Arnold-Chiari Malformation II occurs in almost all children born with both spina bifida and hydrocephalus, but ACM I is typically seen in children and adults without spina bifida.
Of those who have had the decompression surgery w/ a laminectomy, who had physical therapy afterwards? My first surgeon did not have me in physical therapy, but my second surgeon just set up the appt for my first therapy session next week. Just wondering why it seems like some surgeons suggest therapy and others don't....also if you had therapy, did it help your neck?

I have been through Physical Therapy many times. My surgeon recomends it because it releaves pressure. I still do not have range of motion in my upper back, arms or neck. I also have not gained much muscle mass back. I was half paralised, and the doctors dont think I will get a lot of strength back. I have enough to pick up my four year old. I do have a neurologist that thinks that therapy is a waist of money and recomends a massage thearpist for muscle stress, which is caused by Chiari. I think it depends on how it makes you feel. Make sure to find one that has studied Chiari (all types). If they work the wrong area they will cause serious headaches and pain.

I had my decompression in July and started physical therapy a few weeks ago. It is painful, but I think it has helped my range of motion in my neck. HOWEVER...it has also increased symptoms similar to occipital neuralgia...so it has been a trade off. The zinging and zapping on the right side of my head has gotten worse with the increased activity from P/T. I did shop around though for someone who works with chiari, and he had worked with others with this before, so he seems like he knows what he is doing.

my doctor had me go to 3 months of physical therapy after surgery. Mainly because my muscles were very weak and tense. i was 16 years old. It helped me a lot mentally and physically.

My 6mo twin DD's are EBF and just started rice cereal on the first. Everything has been going fine except this morning one of them had a diaper rash (lots of redness around her anus). I read this as one of the signs of an allergy. BUT I did just buy a different brand diaper yesterday (which they have used randomly before w/no issues). Do you think its the cereal or the diaper? Im ready to start...
