Anxiety Support Group
Anxiety is a physical condition marked by intense and persistent feelings of distress, fear, angst or dread. General anxiety caused by routine day-to-day stresses usually passes quickly and is experienced by almost everyone at one time or another. However, such feelings that linger over time and are very difficult to cope with, and which lack a clear cause, may indicate...
I have struggled with anxiety on and off since I was a teenager...as an adult, the occasions became more frequent. However, the last year and a half it feels like I'm getting lost in it. Sometimes I feel like I'm fighting to breathe because I'm being crushed and suffocated under all of the uncontrollable feelings of dread for what may happen. Rationally, I know that these are all "what ifs" and they may not ever happen, but anxiety is so irrational and my brain always wants to be prepared for the worst so I end up torturing myself. I miss the days when I could function without thinking that my world is always going to crumble underneath me. I had a pretty big panic episode last year and was put on Prozac, which helped the anxiety but had other side effects that made day to life miserable so I stopped taking it. I really don't want to have to take pills every day to feel normal again but I don't know what other options I have anymore. All the things that used to help, like exercise and meditation and being outside don't have the effect they used to. I want to be able to live in the present without fearing everything that may or may not happen. I want to feel like a normal person that isn't being crushed under all of this dread and anxiety for the future and is able to enjoy the good things that I have now.

Hope the dog days of summer aren't getting you down!

The never ending sense of dread and automatically jumping to the worst case scenario is very taxing mentally and physically. These are things that have been helping me :
-therapy
-meds
-hobbies that I enjoy
-staying connected with people I love.
-getting 8 hours of sleep at night.
-reading fictional novels
-journaling
-listening to anti-anxiety, calming podcasts.
I hope this helps and you start to find what works for you.
Thank you for your response. It's nice to hear from people that can relate rather than just saying "Don't worry so much"...not that I wish anyone would feel this way too.
Reading actually does help sometimes. Escaping from my reality with a good book is one of the only ways I feel like I can get some relief from my own thoughts. I do journal when it gets overwhelming too which does help a bit. I feel like there's definitely not one thing that makes it more bearable... sometimes, even a combination of many of those things doesn't help if it's a particularly bad day. I was thinking about trying the podcasts, are there any that you could recommend?
Thank you
They can take you away for a little while.
Second, I have let go of my stubbornness about medicine. I tried every supplement possible and every natural remedy I could find, but nothing worked. So I have started thinking of it different. If I had heart disease, would I take medicine? If I had cancer, would I take medicine? Most people would say yes, so Why is it different with anxiety? I have recognized that my anxiety is a severe medical condition like anything else and that medicine exists to help it!
My mother has panic attacks but she has found that taking a small dose SSRI helps everyday. She told her doctor she didn’t want to have to take it. The doctor told her something like “If you can take a small pill every morning and feel normal, what harm is it doing?” I have tried to remember that. Anxiety makes taking medicine a huge deal, but in reality it’s something that can help.
He saves those who are crushed in spirit.
i can relate.
