Anxiety is a physical condition marked by intense and persistent feelings of distress, fear, angst or dread. General anxiety caused by routine day-to-day stresses usually passes quickly and is experienced by almost everyone at one time or another. I noticed you posted this a few times so I believe you must be having a very hard time lately.
I agree with your doctor - it is anxiety & grief.
Have you considered bereavement councelling? It is very helpful and may just be what you require. It will help you through the grieving process & perhaps alleviate some anxiety.
I still get a little anxious when I wake up and a couple times during the day, but nothing like at the beginning.
Just don't stay on meds for too long, doctor are really quick on prescribing pills but I would recommend you to go visit a psychologyst to help you regain your previous state of mind and not be dependent on Xanax forever. The longer you take it the more difficult is going to be to get off it and the harder your are going to feel the rebound, especially without the support of an specialist.
So sorry to hear of your loss. I too had a situation a few months back that I don't think helped much with my nerves.
I was vomiting, not hungry,etc... you are grieving, but it sounds like you need something for the anziety. Are you sleeping well ?
Try to do feel good things to make yourself happy again. It's different for everyone, but I enjoy walking, working out, gardening, spoiling myself a bit with massages and Reiki, ETC... I FORCED myself to do these things even though I didn't feel like it or want to.
Grieving is a process and it's perfectly healthy to grieve.
HUGS and hope you get through this difficult time soon.
