Anxiety Support Group
Anxiety is a physical condition marked by intense and persistent feelings of distress, fear, angst or dread. General anxiety caused by routine day-to-day stresses usually passes quickly and is experienced by almost everyone at one time or another. However, such feelings that linger over time and are very difficult to cope with, and which lack a clear cause, may indicate...
Scary thoughts are just a part of anxiety. Beleive me...as you work on overcoming anxiety in general these horrific thoughts just fade away.
Believe it or not these thoughts (though horribly awful)...serve a purpose. They inappropriately give your brain something other then your initial worry....(the REAL worry)...to think about.
Example:
Say your worried about your finances. Bills are piling up and you lost your job. Your mind is going a mile a minute to figure out a way to stay afloat. A person with anxiety tends to never see an end to theise bad situations and the worry takes on a life of its own. Lost sleep, can't eat, doom and gloom become a major part of your day. One day you are sitting there watching the news and you hear about someone hurting or killing someone. Your brain responds by thinking....OMG what if I did something like that! This thought scares the hell out of you...then click....in a split second this thought becomes a constant scary thought. You now fear hurting someone or worse yet killing someone...yikes!
Here's the thing.....do you notice how this person is no longer concerned about the real problem....which is really....job loss and bills to be paid.
I know it doesn't make sence as to why our brains do this but this is what it does. The reason these "scary thoughts" and all scary thoughts in general scare us is because they go against absolutely everything that we beleive to be moral, just and right. If you weren't moral, just and right....AKA "a normal person"....these thoughs would not scare you. Got it?
Read week nine on my journal page....I go into a bit more detail. I friended you this morning so you will have access.
Until you get started on learning how to overcome this condition here's a little help to stop these thoughts or at least to calm them. Take some slow deep breaths the second you feel yourself thinking these scary thoughts. In through your nose and out through pursed lips. At the same time talk compassionately to yourself and assure yourself that these thoughts are in NO WAY remotely a reflection of who you are.....in fact....you are the complete opposite. You just have anxiety...that's it! That too will fade as you learn what is causing these thoughts to begin with.
My best to you!
