-Avoiding activities is actually what makes your anxiety worse. The first, and most scary, rule with anxiety is to face everything you are afraid of. If you are afraid to leave the house, for example, you would concentrate on going outside your house in small steps. First it would be just stepping outside the door. When that becomes easy to do you would increase it to a point where you are anxious again and do that daily until it becomes easy..and so on and so forth. This is called Exposure Therapy and should be done very slowly and with one scary situation at a time.
Some things you can do when an anxiety attack hits:
--Distraction: watch tv; clean the house; go for a walk while listening to music
--Meditation
--Have a good cry. So often our anxiety is triggered by repressing feelings so let your feelings out. Any feelings. Just make sure to let them out in a safe place and in a way that you do not hurt yourself or anyone else.
I hope this gives you a good start in coping with your anxiety. I have found that coping with it was not enough for me so I found therapy very helpful in finding the root cause of my anxiety (childhood sexual abuse) and as I have healed that my anxiety has all but disappeared.
Take care
