I too went through the same problem. I'd call her to chat and she would gravitate toward her pain and meds that she has to take, how tired she is all the time, stomach issues, etc.
After a while, I just couldn't handle it anymore and stopped calling her. And because of the negative feedback cycle, she would become depressed and never call me.
Eventually, I spoke to my therapist about it and he said it pretty plainly: just tell her that it's hard for you to hear about her pain and make it clear that you'd prefer not to talk about it unless she needs your help with it.
I followed his advice and from then on, my mom and I had very meaningful and fulfilling conversations.
