I withdrew from law school because I could not make myself care, my personal problems were too large.
I am now back at university after 20 odd years, and I initially panicked terribly. I was having to learn online, and keep track of due dates and such, and I would have an anxiety attack just thinking about the work.
This has worn away.
That's the thing: you can't constantly have the same shock reaction to the same thing, because it is no longer the same shock. So basically repeated exposure is the cure.
Repeated exposure with a new outcome: not dying, not being abused, etc etc. Enough repeats of this situation where the terror proved unnecessary is all it takes to make it stop happening, although I must say it can take few experiences to get you there, and very many to get you back.
