Anxiety Support Group
Anxiety is a physical condition marked by intense and persistent feelings of distress, fear, angst or dread. General anxiety caused by routine day-to-day stresses usually passes quickly and is experienced by almost everyone at one time or another. However, such feelings that linger over time and are very difficult to cope with, and which lack a clear cause, may indicate...

I must tell a lot of stuff so every one can see where I am now. When I was growing up, my dad was an abusive alcoholic. My Mom protected us as best she could. It was the 1960's and there were no reach shelters and the police often ignored "domestic disturbances" in our town.
My hands would shake so bad, I received D's in handwriting at school.
As a teen, I had plenty of panic attacks. I obsessed on death and worked myself into states.
Once I decided to end it all. I tried to overdose. As you can see, it didn't work. I saw my Mom's face when I awoke and knew that was out of the question. I couldn't hurt her like that again.
I seemed to get better. Eventually, we had enough warrants against our father he had to agree to separate from our Mom or go to prison.
I got better. I went to church. I got a degree from a community college.
Eventually, I got married and moved to SC. Well, one stress after another hit. My hubby lost his job, we went bankrupt, our church disintegrated, my own beliefs were in turmoil, my best friend died of cancer. I developed diabetes from many years of undiagnosed PCOS.
After 9/11, I was horrified with that. Problems at church caused me to stop going and felt all alone. I had horrific anxiety as never before. I could swear it was a nervous breakdown.
Eventually after counseling and Paxil, I got back on my feet, but I haven't worked in 5 years. We've been living on hubby's salary alone. Every once in a while, I get the niggling feeling "What would happen to me if something happened to him". I would put it out of my mind.
Well, my mother is 82. Everyday at 5 we would talk on the phone. I felt bad about living in another state, but she said she was glad I had my hubby. One day, she didn't call. I called her and she didn't answer. She never goes anywhere. I called the Police and they went to her and she had fell.
She was in the hospital about a week and my hubby took me there twice. My sister saw about getting her into a Nursing Home because she really can't be on her own now.
At home, by my myself, I start to get anxious thoughts. My Mom was my protector when I was small. I would feel on my own, but I do have hubby and family. However, my thoughts go way ahead to the time when maybe they are all gone and I am the only one left. I think, how will I cope? Will there be enough money? Will I wind up on the streets? How will I get my medicine?
That is certainly a sign of "GAD" to feel those feelings that other people who live one day at a time don't worry about.
I think what would put my mind at ease would be practical answers to my fears. That society wouldn't just abandon a person who was in that situation. That there would be places or people I could turn to for help.
That I would not be left alone.
Any advice on how to handle all this would be welcome.

Your worries are normal. But, what are the chances that all your family will precede you in death? Not likely. Start making plans now for your later years. If you need money, try getting a part time job to start. If you take positive steps now, your concerns will lessen. It is difficult when ones parents pass away, but to everything there is a season. A time to live, a time to die. I prefer to celebrate ones life, and grieve only for a little while. Cherish your time with her now, and you won't feel so bad about being away when she is gone. I hope this helps, and I pray you will start looking at the positive things in life. Hugs...

Thank you all so much!

Hi! I'm sorry you are feeling so bad. Anxiety and depression definitely hurts and those feelings should not be discounted. You should know that you are not alone - many of us have these feelings and worries. Keep your head up and remember to say positive thoughts everyday. Think of all the great things you have done and the positive things in your life. Celebrate your strength and pat yourself on the back for a job well done. Even if it's getting through an anxiety attack - way to go! Your worries are valid but sometimes they can make you miserable. For a moment just sit back and take some deep breaths and say to yourself. "No matter what - it will be ok."
