Hi,
I'm thinking I should go see a psychiatrist to get my script for anitdepressants. Right now I am going to my general doctor and seeing an anxiety specialist CBT
But I'm thinking that with all these powerful brain drugs maybe i should be seeing someone who specializes in it.
any thoughts here?

Well as you know a therapist is strictly for CBT. And talking etc..... Now if you've made the decision that you want to get drugs then yes I would go to a psychiatrist and not your GP. They are more specialized in that area. And I don't think GP's can give out prescriptions for that stuff anyways lol. But what I may do if I were you. Is during your next session with your therapist talk about how you think you want to start some drugs and what not and see what they have to say about it. It's ultimately your decision. But it never hurts to have a second opinion :)

Both my general med doc and my ob/gyn have prescribed Zoloft for me. The ob/gyn wanted to give me Xanax but I wouldn't take it. I am ok with my md giving me the Zoloft, but he and I have worked well together for 5 years. So I trust him. Go with your gut.

I think it depends on what your regular doctor can offer you. If you think you need more help then i would be seeing a pyschiatrist

Yea you should go to a psychiatrist. They have more knowledge about your problem.

If you feel you need more than going to a pdoc is best. My family doctor referred me to a pdoc. They are better trained to deal with this issues compared to a family doc who just really oversees everything.

yea I think that is what I'm going to do. Go see a psychiatrist. I've been on effexor again for a week, and I'm still not feeling much better. I'm kind of nervous now about goign to work tomorrow. But I think it's better to go there than sit at home!

slow down. how is the CBT going. do you talk very much to your therapist about personal hurts and losses. you need to be cautious about taking meds either from a gp or pdoc. have you had a physical exam and lab tests.

I can't believe a gyno would prescribe zoloft!

Not only Zoloft, he said he usually gives women Xanax and some of his patients just like having the bottle in their purse so they know it's there. I thought it was weird too.

Of course he's a man...

gooch, yea CBT is really good, but my anxiety is really super high right now and I'm now getting depressed too. Crying all the time. I'm not sure if its the meds making me feel this way or what. That's what i want to find ou. I've tried going with no meds before and it's not that good.
