A lot of those things help you sleep. Citalopram helps you sleep. Mirtazepine helps you sleep. Reading a book will help you sleep, and banning anything electronic from your bedroom will make a huge difference too. Forcing yourself to do some strenuous exercise during the day will help you sleep. Having all the racing thoughts go away is mainly what helps you sleep.
I think bipolar is what they used to call manic depression, because people would have periods of mania, paint huge paintings, write novels, etc - intense concentration, intense activity and no sleep at all for days or weeks while they have this incredible output - followed by depression, inactivity, exhaustion, despair; burnout. These cycles would last days or weeks and kind of self perpetuate themselves. So if you have that, you'd probably know. What you might just have is not enough stimulation/activity during the day, causing overstimulation/mind racing at night.
If you can find a way to get a physical job, eg delivering the mail, or gardening, it might give you enough stimulation and reality during the day that you're not so vulnerable to the unreality at night. There won't be any point taking a sedative at night if you are not active enough during the day because there's only so much rest you can force your body to take.
