I was thinking of also creating a website. The thing is that something else gets in the way. Either I don't write or I don't have money to create the site..or I am working..or down..so i don't look into it or do anything further. I say go for it also.
I really feel that people need to learn about mental illnesses. I was thinking of going into schools and talking about it. Kids say "I have OCD" or "omg, I had a panic attack." They have no clue. They make fun of other kids that are freaking out..calling them names, etc. No wonder, people don't want to be up front about their mental issues. Maybe if they are taught that it's okay and that they don't have to be ashamed...then we wouldn't have so much depression and suicide.
I'm 17 and i could be in college right now taking history but because of my GAD, social phobia, and clinical depression i had to take time off from school. I deal very badly with change but i'm really interested in getting involved helping those with mental illnesses(a lot of my family has mental illnesses too, most just mild depression, anxiety, or OCD, and like you i had an uncle with schizophrenia). I'm thinking about going in to become a social worker- it's a 2 year course and I think I'll be able to handle it. After that I can always make the choice to go back to school in the future and become more involved with psychiatry.
Best of luck to you! We definitely need more people involved in helping those with mental illness in Canada.
Within the next year or so I would like to be enrolled in Psycology =)..Thats the plan anyway!!!
