12 year old son on zoloft and abilify

Hello,,
I have a 12 year old, he started out on luvox which worked great, but he reached the maximum dose, and he seemed to become immune to it. He has been on Zoloft for about a year, and he has increased to the maximum dose of 200mg, and I really don't think it is doing much at all. He started seeing a neurologist who discovered Hoshimotos Thyroiditis, so we are treating that with synthroid, but the neurologist added Abilify as well in May. I am honestly not seeing much improvement or change.
Now that school started, first year at junior high, it is a disaster. I am wondering if anyone else has had any experience with Abilify? I have read in other discussions that Zoloft has not worked for others. I am going to talk to the neurologist about switching him to Prozac. I just hate to see him suffer with such severe anxiety at school. I know now if we switch we have to ween and start the Prozac slowly, I just don't want him to have anxiety during the process. But I will do whatever it takes. We are looking into a new therapist, because he was not getting any help from the one he was seeing for over a year. She was even calling him to her office by the wrong name for his appointment. How sad is that. If anyone has any input I would love to hear from you. Brand new to this forum, Lots of experience with this stuff.

I do not have a lot of knowledge about the medications, but if they are not having an affect then I would look to switch. On a school note, make sure his counselor is aware of his anxiety issues, he may qualify for an IEP if he is not already on one and that will get him services. Schools also have mental health professionals and therapists that come to the school who may be able to work with him as well.

I have a 12 year old daughter on Prozac, we tried Zoloft and it was horrible for her.Prozac was a life saver!!! We weaned her off once and it was a disaster so I know it helps. What therapist calls a patient by the wrong name? I would not walk but run out of there. My daughter also suffers from anxiety, especially at school. We have a 504 plan for her and it also was a life saver. She has accomodations like she may leave class to ease anxiety when she needs to,in the past she has had a positive adult role model to meet her in the morning and give her positive reinforcement. There is a lot you can do.Who prescribes his meds? The therapist should be doing CBT,if not you are wasting your time. Daughter has improved so much in therapy. Also I am involved in her therapy,I make suggestions( not always right) but the important thing is daughters therapist includes me as an important part of the team.We had s horrible therapist before this one, only talked and played games. If he is on the highest dose with no results then it is not working, but also meds alone without CBT is just a bandaid, one day he will have to probably be off it and that is where CBT will help. Its like a broken bone, you can take pain meds but until you cast it and repair the problem the broken bone will still be there. With maturity my daughter will have to rely on what she has learned with CBT and apply that in her life, then she can begin to be weaned off.Daughters doctor said the Prozac is not a fix all,it is used so that she CAN do the work. Look into 504 plans,it is his right. I have a lot of expierence with them so let me know if you want to talk I will PM you my phone number

I agree that prozac is a life changer! My 12 year daughter is a different kid on it. Push for the switch and take it slowly. You're on the right track!! :)
