I'm 45 and the beginnings of our stories are similar. I treated my pain with 12-16 Advil per day for 15 years. Luckily, I have no kidney damage from it. My, so far, happy ending goes like this:
I have not had a flare up in more than 5 years. I do not take any pain medication. I recently took up running (just completed my first 5K). I also started weight training and stretching and have decided to straighten out my spine and loosen my hips as much as possible.
I am aware that fusion in my Spine, Sacroiliac Joints and Ribcage is not reversible, but I will stretch and strengthen my body to the point that it functions as normal as it can.
You sleep on a floor? Flat on your back? Do you use a pillow or does your head touch the floor? I have started using a Kettlebell to try to straighten my posture by lying on my back and resting the weight on my chin. I allow the weight to push my head and neck down. It's very painful, but each painful little crunch and crack is very satisfying.
I do not suffer from Ankylosing Spondylitis, I thrive in spite of it!!!
