Anyone with severe as?

My father, now in 60s, developed severe ankylosing spondilitis in his 20s. I dont know what the treatments are now but in his case he took pain medication and waited around until his spine and neck became completely fused. I guess they didnt think surgery would help and now it would not be possible. Are there any ways to relieve pain/stress on the body? He also has arthritis but he still works a phyically demanding job. Is anyone else severely deformed by this? Just curious, ive never met anyone else with as. Thank you

Hi, i am 50 and have what is considered severe I have had surgery and I wonder why your being told surgery is not possible as the next 20 or so years should not be considered less viable then the next 20myears would be to someone your age, as long as your father is willing to fight for his right to have surgery and you find the right neurosurgeon then he should do it, my husband is having surgery next week and he is 54 years old he is active, vibrant and it never once occurred to us that he should not pursue surgery.
You didn't mention what therapies your father was already taking, biologics? NSAIDs, dmards? Fentenyl, pain pills, swim therapy, physical therapy? It may be time for you to take an active role in his doctors visits if he has so far been unable to convince his Dr to refer him to a neurosurgeon then some pushing is in order and sometimes family stepping in makes a world of difference. Push for the best care it's his right to be given the opportunity to live with less pain and to be given the latest treatment options available good luck
