I was made fun of in school.I think alot of kids experience it.I'm sorry your daughter is going through this.I would just tell her some kids make fun of thigs they don't understand and to just ignore them.Easier said then done I know.

Hi Brandi, thanks for your reply. We have told her just that but as you say a lot harder said than done. However the situation does seem to have eased a little this week., Either that, or she's not telling us and i so hope thats not the case because we don't want her bottling things up.

This doesn't really matter, but I was wondering what grade of school is your daughter in, Olthea? Little kids don't understand things like this and I sometimes think that they fabricate things to look smarter to their friends. I went through this with my niece (7yo) and nephew (9yo) , not at school, but in the neighborhood . I live next doors to the neighborhood playground and the kids would see me either in a wheelchair or with prosthetic leg/walker on their way to play. I started calling my niece and nephew and their friends up to the porch and just talked to them, offered them bottled water. The friends would ask questions and learn about me and the "freaky" leg, lol. Now they come around on their own and the talk quite often. Is there somehow you can interact with your daughters friends and let them "learn"? School or birthday party or anything?

Hi Jennifer, Thanks for replying, in answer to your question. Olivia is 7, I have spoken to her class teacher and the Principal and have said I'm very happy to come down to the school and chat with the children answer questions and explain how I do things etc.

What surprises us most is that the incidents have only started recently, we have a feeling its some of the childrens older siblings that are instigating the comments, maybe when they are at home.

So far this week it's been a little easier and she is less reluctant to go to school. Hopefully it's run its course

The Marine solution to it is to put your leg on walk up to their door and kick their ass for not educating their child on appropriate respect for their fellow man/woman and for letting their little heathen daughter think she is perfect :) lol sorry I had throw that out there.

There will always be those few that will be cruel no matter what, and to that I'd say usmcjeff has the right idea :) Unfortunately we can't get away with that no matter how much we might like to. I'm a big fan of "taste of your own medicine". I think that it's awful that these kids are doing that to your daughter.

I have no children, but have several nieces and nephews that I am highly involved with. When one of my nephews was about your daughter's age his boy scout troop had a "disability awareness" presentation and my nephew asked me to come and speak. I brought a spare prosthesis without the cover on so all the kids could see the inner workings, had pictures of me skiing and cycling, etc. and the kids thought I was just about the neatest aunt around. I think I saw you mentioning something about offering to go to the school to speak about this. I think that's a good idea, but I'd push for a step further. Perhaps your daughter's school could put on a disability awareness day for all of the students, to include some kids having to use wheelchairs all day, being on crutches, wearing glasses that simulate macular degeneration, etc. If your daughter is 7 I'd say the timing would be just right.

I'm not sure how you lost your leg, but mine was due to an accident at age 18. During my presentation I had to be careful not to scare the kids, but to let them know that life can change in an instant and one may have to face hard challenges that could be stigmatizing and to be careful of what you say and do toward others because you never know what can happen.

Has your daughter explained why her Mom is an amputee to the people that are giving her the hard time? Most kids when the finally get the story of what happened they tend to be more open minded.They shy away from kids because they don`t know the real story ,,,,so they tend to say stuff that`s harmful because they don`t know the answer,,,,so they call you or your daughter names.

Thanks so much for your thoughts and replies, The situation now is thankfully much better. We did arrange a Disability Awareness day which went extremely well, the children were so respective and in fact all the parents who either attended or heard about the feedback were delighted,

The contrast now is quite incredible no more taunting in fact they think her mum is "cool" lol , not sure about that but its so nice to know she's enjoying school again.

Just so you are aware, I was born without my arms so have had not had to deal with the trauma of losing a limb/s later in life so all power to you that have had to handlle that as well.

Hi Karen. I'm so glad that the Disability Awareness day went well and was a productive tool to help kids have a level of empathy toward those with missing limbs and other disabilities. I'm sure you are a "cool mum" and am glad to hear that your daughter is able to enjoy school again without cruel taunting.
