Amputees Support Group
Amputation is the removal of a body extremity by trauma or surgery. Many have undergone amputation or have been living with a missing limb since birth. In either case, life as an amputee can be challenging. This is the place to find others going through the same experiences as an amputee. Share your thoughts, troubles, and solutions with the community.

Kids usually want to know how my prosthesis works and what I can do. Some of the questions that I have been asked... How does it stay on? Is it heavy? Do you sleep with it on? Can you swim with it on? Can you run? How do they make the socket? Why is it red, white and blue? Why is it so different from my grandpa's/grandma's prosthesis? Does it hurt to wear it? Does it hurt to walk? Do you have a cheetah foot too?
If I do get questions from kids about how I lost my leg, I answer them with age appropriate answers.
I don't mind talking to kids. Kids are inquisitive and want to learn rather than an adult who tends to ask because they are nosey. I think it's important for kids to grow up knowing that amputees can do anything an able bodied person can do.

I also do not have a cover on my leg. I wear shorts all year. I like to be able to make adjustments on the fly.No need to look for a place to drop my pants.Wearing shorts and letting it hang in the open, opens you up for more questions. I answer any one who asks. Very few women will ask. Most men who ask are older, and they assume I lost it in the service. When they ask if I lost it in the "war" they are refering to Vietnam. Makes feel old, especially when I went in,it had been over for 8 years.
