Tax credit or deduction

Does anyone know about tax deductions or credits for amputees?(Notably, I am not a veteran) How about a credit for money spent making my bathroom more accessible? It won't be fully ADA compliant because the door won't be wide enough, but it's otherwise intended to make my life easier! If it makes a difference, I am self-employed and work from home, so my home is also my place of business. Thanks folks. :-)

I have been trying to find the same information without any luck. My wife is a bi-lateral upper arm amputee. I have done extensive work in both our kitchen and bathroom to make them more accessible for her. At nearly $14000 over the last 2 years. Let me know if you find anything.

I hope my accountant doesn't mind me cutting / pasting his reply to the same question. I think the income threshhold for the first is very, very low. Regarding the second option, it may only be available to businesses. But as I'm self employed part of my home is considered office space. I found a similar State program (I live in Virginia) that gives a credit for homes that do remodeling for accessibility. It covers 1/2 of the cost, up to $5,000. One hitch I may have is that I made my bathroom accessible for me....but that doesn't mean it's ADA compliant. The door to get in is only about 28" across, not 32" as required by ADA. It would be far too expensive and not worth my while to change that.

His reply was:
There are two tax credit programs available for disabled individuals. One is called the elderly and permanently disabled tax credit program which I do not think will work for you as you are not old enough to use it and you generally make to much money each year. The second program which is called the disabled access credit program, however I believe we can partially use as it provides a tax credit up top fifty percent of $ 10,250 to allow a business to be architecturally accessible to disabled individuals; which would apply to the bathroom. The only issue that I believe we have to decide upon is how much of your home is actually your office to apply the credit to. I hope this info. helps.
