ok lets put all of our brains together and figure out a cheaper way of running our cars...it stinks living in the country there are no buses and to get to a store or places you have to travel....ugh

I live in the desert Southwest and our gas is 3.63/gallon! This is insane. We are one of the richest countries in the world and gas and food items keep going up and up but our wages are staying the same. I hate to think what we are going to be like in 5 to 10 years. Its a scary world out there.

The thing that angers me is they(the powers that be) know we need our cars and we need food and we will pay whatever we have to to survive. It doesn't do any good to boycott gas or food because its publicity for the Man!! I don't know why people don't see it. Oh well, I hope we can all get on the same page and start making a difference and show them we arent going to take much more. I feel like we are slowing being turned over to a regime or something the way we are having to ration out things. Just my opinion.

Well guys I am in the Chicago suburbs and today I saw it hit $3.95 a gallon for regular! That is pretty scary. The only stations lower at $3.79 were Mobil stations and I can assume they have not gotten new gas deliveries. SO yes you guessed it at $3,79 gas was a bargain and I filled up both cars totaling $78.00!!! And neither car ws on empty! OUCH!!!!!

It makes me want to go get a horse and buggy! Or better yet start to use a bikcle. Yeah we have a hard time paying for food and gas! All I can say is the Word of God talks about people becoming greedy in the last days 2Tim.3:2! And you know what that is exactly what's happening! Oh well, I'm just glad that I don't stand in thier shoes! God is my provider!

In Chicago a BP station is selling regular unleaded today for $4.29 a gallon.

State of MT Unleaded gasoline as of today 3.55/Gallon and of course steadily rising. This is crap and I agree. Does anyone know where we are in regards to soybean/corn production for the flex fuels, ect?? OH and LOL anybody got like an oldschool Honda for sale? LOL I drive a V8 5.0L and if I buy a good economy car I will save that much in gas in the first year alone :)

I remember when I was younger, in the 70's we had a gas shortage, and everyone started driving smaller more economical cars. Seems today, everyone is driving larger vehicles that love gas. Which of course, makes it go up for everyone. Does anyone else remember this, and the Buy American campain during that time. I worked for a car manufacturing company with 25 plants that all went to Mexico in the 80's. Or, we made wiring harnesses for cars. Anyway, as long as we are willing to pay high prices and fill up large cars, or 2 or 3 to each family, prices are going to continue to climb..........why not.

We do need to do something about the prices. I haven't heard much on the oil companies complaining how they lost money.

If no one in the United States bought any gas for a day how much would they lose?

While we're on it; how about a tire where the treads never wear down.

Don't I remember the early 70's. But I bought a 69 396 Chevelle that only got about 7 miles per gallon. Gas was cheap. I also remember when OPEC raised the price of oil and caused all the long lines and gas rationing. I was in a Navy air squadron and we had to cut back on the amount of flights we made. It seems like a lifetime ago.

The problem of high gas is mostly due to extra demand from places like China. You know how many people they have and they want all the modern convienences Americans have. We need to come up with altrnative fuel ideas, cars that get way better gas mileage, and cars that need little or no gas to run efficiently. The government should offer a high reward to anyone or any company that can do just that! The problem is that even if we cut down on driving as consumers, the airlines, the businesses, the trucking industry etc has to continue to eat the high cost of fuel, which filters down in raised prices of goods. It is a vicious cycle! And making ethanynol out of corn is making the cost of consumables skyrocket. I think we should tax the gas companies for gouging! I still cannot understand how when the oil futures go up so do the prices instantly, by 10 or 20 cents a gallon at a time. When oil futures go down we see a penny decrease at the pump a week later. Someone is making large profits and it isn't the independent gas stations, they are hurting too. When is this ludacriuosy going to end? We have some of the greatest scientific minds in this country. How hard can it be if they all brainstorm on getting this problem solved?

If those great minds made a car that got great gas mileage then the oil companies wouldn't sell as much gas and their profits would decrease. It just goes to show you how powerful the oil companies are. They own and run the world. If the consumers cut back on our gas useage they would jusgt raise the price to make up for it. What do we do? What can we do?

We can reward those that figure out ways to fuel automobiles more economically. Also, tax the oil companies to the hilt for the windfall profits they are making, unless they can prove they are putting those profits into new refineries. The taxes we put on the oil compnaies can pay to help rebuild the infrastructure in this country which is sorely needed. Things like power grids and power plants. I believe with global warming rewarding ecologicvally friendly ideas with monetary gains and tax incentives may actually get us on the right road to going where we need to be. What does eveyone think? I agree with you Steve, if we cut down on gas consumption the gas companies will raise prices to make up for the shortfall, but isn't our country founded on free enterprise of supply and demand? We the people cutting consumption is not enough, we need strong legislation to pressure the oil companies! This will take politicians with backbone, because as we know the oil lobbyists are very powerful in washington.

I think the scientific minds have brainstormed, that's how ethynol is being made out of corn, and hybrids are being made. The problem with the ideas being developed, is the price. Hybrids get 60mpg, but not many people can afford a hybrid.

If everyone in the US drove a hybrid, gas companies would lose massive amounts of money. Think about it....mileage would be anywhere from 5-12 times better than most vehicles we have now. Which in turn, would force some companies to stop price gouging~ which to some extent it is not gouging, the price per barrel keeps risisng with the demand for oil from every country.

Another answer would be to tap into our reserves for a little while..... price per barrel would decrease by at least half, if not more, therefore drastically reducing prices at the pump. Even if the US does this for two months, just two months, we would see subtle changes in the economy.

It will be a dominoe effect, spending less money on gas will provide people will more money for groceries and other needs, or wants depending on the income of the person, ultimately starting a "economic boost". Of course this will have to happen a few times a year, but I feel it could work.

Although I agreed with what you said, tapping into our reserves is just putting a banaid on a wound that needs stitches. I do not believe it would boost the economy because people would know it is only temporary and therefore still be prudent with additional cash on hand. Also, it wouldn't help companies that deal with fuel issues on a daily basis, unless they went and hoarded gas, which would not be a good thing.The ethanyol being produced is using corn commodities to make it and that equates to higher food prices, so that is not the answer either. I do not believe the incentives have been dangled out there for the great minds to really brainstorm about this problem. The country has been run by oil moguls for so long, and they have such a stranglehold on the politicians that any changes would be hard fought. If gas consumption went down due to more efficient automobiles, then gas companies would be forced to jump on the bandwagon to continue to reap profits. Hybrids are not affordable because they are not a necessity for everyone. The government could easily make the hybrids affordable by supplementing the auto industry that came up with the best design and least expensive vehicle. The problem is Americans have a love affair with automobiles. The bigger, the brassier the better. We have to make it understood that we need to change those ideas and begin to think small and economical. In Israel they have perfected an electric car. There are places along the highways to stop and charge the batteries. That is a country that saw what was coming and was proactive. We Americans are fat and lazy, and we want all the comforts we are used to. Therefore change is hard to swallow and why it hasn't been forced down our throats. The other thing is to better out public transportation infrastructures. If we made public transit more accessible,as well as rewarding and encouraging those that used public transit, then it too would become more popular.

You're right. Americans are fat and lazy and take to much for granted. And we are a throw away society. Recycling can also help drive down prices. There is so much we can do to bring down prices but most of us rather sit back and let the next person do it.
Another way we can get things done is with our power of voting. One person doesn't make a change but if we could just get together, in numbers we can make ourselve heard.
Getting people to discuss things and intereact with each other is what this group is all about.
It makes me proud to be American when I see people working together to find solutions to our problems.
