I am pretty sure my grandmother has a staph infection. A few months ago , the hospice nurse said that she had staph, even though they didn't do cultures.It cleared up. Now, it is back. She has green and yellow discharge in her diaper. There aren't any blisters this time. When she had it before, there were blisters filled with green pus or drainage. At the time she told us that her system couldn't handle the antibiotics to get rid of it because she has a GI bleed. She just told us that it was something that couldn't be fixed. I guess my question is, should I push them to give her antibiotics to get rid of it, or will it make her GI bleed much worse? i know this is a damned if you do, damned if you don't situation. but any and advice or past experience would be appreciated. She also doesn't eat anything at all. We just give her ensure and water, but she has been drinking less and less. She has lost a lot of weight. And she was a big woman.
Unfortunately, during end stage care there is only so much medicine can do; they may feel the risks of more antibiotics does not outweigh the benefits of the treatment. What is the nursing staff telling you on treatment?
The lack of appetite is an end stage symptom. Ensure gives her some nutrition but not what her body actually needs. As the body starts shutting down and preparing to move on the less the patient will eat or drink.
