I do hope your husband is using both, if not maybe you can ask his doc about it and also if not maybe you can look up that research on the web and print it out to show him if he's not already aware of it.
When his hallucinations started he stopped sleeping and I was afraid to sleep because of what he was seeing, like thinking he was setting the neighbors house on fire by looking at it.
I don't know how severe your husbands problem is or how it's affecting your ability to handle daily life but don't wait to get help.
I awoke (about 2 am) to find my son (20) talking to him in the hallway outside our room. He was saying, "Go back to bed, Mom will help you." My husband was upset because he told me that, 'there were strange people running through our house" and he was afraid "they were going to hurt us." I said, "You are just dreaming, honey, no one is here." He was adamant that there were bad people in the house. So now I'm a bit tired today because he interrupted my sleep. So I guess I will contact his doctor and discuss it with him.
It may be pretty common but it is also pretty disturbing for the caregiver/family and not getting enough sleep is a big problem for some of us. I don't know if I'm lucky or not, if my husband thought there were dangerous strangers in the house he would wake me up and tell me to go get them.
Do talk to your doctor, the proper meds will make both of you feel better. Can you imagine how it must feel to think people are out to get you and there is nothing you can do about it? Hugs to both of you.
My mom died of AD. My mom stopped walking in june 2008. The day she stopped walking she was on her 3rd day of not having any sleep at all! She insisted of going to the bathroom every 10 seconds. I mean walk out and walk right back in to the batchroom. I must have fallen asleep for maybe 3 minutes in the middle of the night. The next thing i heard was my mom screaming. She had fallen down. In the moring we notice that she would not move. And we are talking about a woman who in the first place had 16 kids, always had something to do. If it was not baking, it was washing clothes, ironing, washing dishes, etc. etc. She had suffered a stroke. My mom had a hard time adapting to not walking, she just had so much energy inside of her that it would drive her crazy. She would cry alot, wanted to die all the time, but most of all stay up all night. The Dr. gave us SERAQUEL It worked like magic for about 10 days. But hullicinations began. It allowed my mom to sleep at night. After that they gave us Atavan hullicinations got worse. My mom always saw people, animals crawling up, sometimes, she would scare us cuz she said "Look, you have a tarantula on your face", or "Look at all of those snakes". People with AD DO NOT, DO NOT comprehend when you tell them there is nothing there! Especially if u yell at them. The best thing i recommend is for u to change the subject and talk to them about the past. I know it is hard to do that in the middle of the night after your sleep is interrupted. But you have to, absolutley have to be patient with your love one.. Any one that is taking the responsabilty into caring for a love one with A.D. HAS to have the time, and most of all the patience for caring. Hullicinations are another symptoms that come with A.D. We learned to give my mom the tranquilizers only when we knew she was not gonna sleep or was getting fuzzy. There will be a time when drugs just wont work Deborah, so hang in there! XXXX TONS OF HUGS AND PRAYERS FOR YOU AND YOUR FAMILY!!
