Alopecia Areata Support Group
Alopecia areata ("baldness in spots") is a form of hair loss from areas of the body, usually from the scalp. Because it causes bald spots on the head especially in the first stages, it is also called spot baldness. Hair loss can extend to eyebrows, eyelashes and facial and nasal hair and create more bald spots elsewhere in the body.
Although, hair loss has become one of the common problems faced by many men and women globally, yet people are often reluctant to seek a treatment for hair loss. Even in the present era of modern medical technologies, a large number of people still believes that nothing much can be done in order to stop hair loss. First of all, you must know what is causing hair loss. There may be a lot of factors that can trigger hair loss. Some common factors that can be one of the causes for your hair fall include- lack of nutrition, medicines, poor lifestyle, improper sleep, medical conditions, cancer treatments, hormonal imbalance and more significantly, your own genes. As per the clinical researchers, it is found that around 80% of the baldness happens because of your own genetics. If you have an ancestral history of going bald, you are at a larger risk of experiencing hair loss or baldness, once in your lifetime.

Depending on the cause of hair loss, there are a number of hair loss treatments available in the country. Let's discuss them in detail-
Medications-
Hair loss and thinning of hairs are one of the common problems faced by people all over the world. At the same time, many topical treatments such as Minoxidil and finasteride are the most popular drugs which are used by a number of people to cure bald patches, unknown hair loss, hair loss after giving birth to a newborn. Minoxidil belongs to a class of drugs known as vasodilators and is widely used by men to cure male pattern baldness.
On the other hand, Finasteride is a medicine which is used for treating androgenic alopecia or male pattern baldness at the crown and middle of the scalp.
Non-surgical treatments-
PRP is a non-surgical, hair restoration therapy that uses your own blood to promote a re-growth of hairs on the scalp. It can be performed without or with conjunction to the hair transplant treatments.
In a PRP therapy, a person's own plasma is injected into the affected areas of the scalp through injections. Thereafter, the growth factors in your blood cells do their job to stimulate the hair growth naturally. Our blood plasma (PRP) contains certain elements that help in restoring hair growth and promotes a fuller, healthier looking hairs.
PRP is a suitable hair restoration therapy and can be used for both men and women, who want to undergo a hair restoration.
Surgical treatments-
At present, the two most commonly known surgical treatments for treating hair loss are- Follicular Unit Transplant(FUT) and Follicular Unit Extraction(FUE). Let's s discuss them in detail-
Follicular Unit Transplant is a technique of hair restoration in which a long and thin strip of tissue containing hair grafts is removed from the safe donor area in the back and sides of the scalp. Then the strip is taken to the hair cutting room where a team of technicians work together to separate the individual follicles and preparing them for the implantation. An implanter then placed the prepared follicles into the slits made in the scalp with utmost care and precision.
Follicular Unit Extraction-
With changing times, FUE treatments have become a popular choice in the league of hair transplant procedures. In FUE transplant, each follicular unit is taken individually, directly from the scalp and does not involve removal of skin from the safe donor zone in the scalp. The hair follicles are extracted randomly from various regions of the scalp and transplanted into a recipient area of the scalp, but, it results in a less density of the hairs in the recipient area.
Combined FUT and FUE technique- In a combined FUT+FUE technique, a strip of skin containing grafts which are unaffected by the androgens are extracted by making incisions in the scalp. Thereafter, the harvested strip is slivered and excess tissue is removed from the individual follicles. Then, the follicles are carefully transplanted into the recipient site by using FUE technique. The combined technique is generally helpful in performing facial hair restoration surgeries like the eyebrow reconstruction, beard and moustache transplant.
A need for hair transplant-
Although there are some topical treatments available for treating the hair loss, you should understand that these medicines are designed to cease hair fall and adding thickness to the available hairs on the scalp. But, if the bulb of the hair falls out of its place, it results in the baldness and the medicines will not do any benefit in such cases. Hence, hair transplant is the only option to restore hairs in case of permanent baldness.
