Alopecia Areata Support Group
Alopecia areata ("baldness in spots") is a form of hair loss from areas of the body, usually from the scalp. Because it causes bald spots on the head especially in the first stages, it is also called spot baldness. Hair loss can extend to eyebrows, eyelashes and facial and nasal hair and create more bald spots elsewhere in the body.

my hair just started falling out 6 days ago, now i am a wreck over this !!! I have an appt with a dermatologist on Thursday this week but it seems like forever for this day to come.. I don't know or think it is a Alopecia Areata problem only because of how this all started.. About 2 years ago i got a lump on the back of my head and i started picking at it, it would heal and i wouldn't leave it alone.. Eventually in time i got several to many of these lumps on my scalp and because i do know it's a stress related problem i continued to pick at them and it came to the point i didn't even realize i was doing this.. My husband has Terminal Kidney Cancer and it started at the time he wasn't doing good, hospital runs, surgeries, all kinds of emergencies.. I can remember i would be talking to a doctor about him and my hand was picking at my head without me even realizing this.. I ended up with a really bad infectiion about 5-6 months ago, i couldn't even lay my head on a soft pillow without having horrible pain.. My pcp presribed me certain shampoo and a solution called Clobetasol Propionate Topical solution, this a steriod, and i over used it.. He referred me to a Deratologist which 2 appt's i canceled, the first was the fear of finding out what was wrong & embarressment, the second was i stopped picking and everything on my scalp healed up.. I had several bald spots, one very big one on the top of my head and it feels like baby skin.. My hair was thick & shiny but my scalp was so dry and itchy, and i have tried everything to hairdresser solutions to over the counter scalp moisturizers, nothing helped only for a little while.. Now 5 days ago all the hair on the top of my head is falling out to the point i need to wear a base ball cap everytime i go out.. I do have hair thats starting to grow in under where the falling out hair but not in the big spot which is where the worst part of the infection was..
I realized i have been under alot of stress for a long time and i have an aniexty disorder, my doctor even asked me if i thought this was due to stress, before the hair falling out stage.. I was having a problem with high blood pressure and he put me on a Beta Blocker which can cause hair loss, but i don't take that to often, only when i really need it.. I also have a problem with my Thyroid which i take medication for which is Synthroid.. I have had my blood work done 4 months ago and my levels were fine.. I do have a very low Vitimin D level it was just a 7 which is way to low.. I do take Vit D supplements every day..
I know this is not what your support group is about but if anyone can help me i would be very grateful.. Also has anyone ever done this to themselves and this has happened to them ?? I am so concerned and upset today and i am even afraid of going to my appt for fear of what the Dermatologist will tell me, but i am going no matter what, i need help with this..

Take care of the rest of your issues the best you can and don't worry too much about the hair -- let the dermatologist worry about it, not you!!!
