For 15 years my step daughter battled mental illness and addiction, often valiantly .
But Saturday she lost that battle. She was not suicidal although she often had been in the past. She simply took too much or too strong a dose of heroin and died . She was 32.

You are right about not wasting the chance of recovery - I personally knew a good number of lovely people who never got a second chance and whose families will have a sad time this Christmas.

This was the eventuality I fear.
Looking back I was pretty ignorant, had the Stereotypical image of a drug user in my mind, what they doing here, that's dirty, different to drinking etc...
Got talking to one, a nice young chap, good family, intelligent, educated, always held down a job,
but his substance abuse had increased steadily, weed, pill's, alcohol, heroin.
Used to inject while at work and could carry on, no one knew.. just needed more numbness.
Apparantly when heroin users quit, they replace with alcohol again, back down the ladder.
I don't judge now, knew he was just self-medicating like I am, only came to a few groups, always excuses, but I saw him about, still struggling now..
Here in Blighty Alcohol's socially accepted but drugs aren't.
If Alcohol and Tobacco were discovered tomorrow, they'd be Class A Drugs as for the amount of deaths they are responsible for.
Just thoughts in my mind.....

You raise an interesting question re prohibition or not and I have no personal experience with illegal drugs. Even so I don't think there is a practical, one size fits all, simple answer to such things. It's an individual and inside job for each and every one of us.
Once I had found my solution I no longer have a problem with that substance that had me enslaved to it. I personally believe that all addicts and alcoholics have a spiritual thirst that they try quench through some avenue of anticipated ecstasy or release from the mundane and careworn general experience of life trying to be lived on a purely practical and logical plane.
As intelligent, sentient beings just being clever, practical and capable is not enough. It's a fundamental unconscious yearning for completeness and the only safe way to find that completeness is through a spiritual high and subsequent spiritual experiences.
That expression of spirituality can be enhanced through poetry, art, literature, nature, religion, music, religion or direct communion with God.
Those of us who seek some such state of bliss may try to find it down the wrong and deadly rabbit hole of drugs and alcohol and are in mortal danger unless we can find a way to back up and seek the rabbit hole that will lead us to spiritual freedom - whatever form that takes.
None of this is my original thinking of course but it is a combination of thought from far greater minds than mine that is wholly satisfying to those kind of questions for me.
