I struggled with alcoholism for many, many years. Always fighting for control, never gaining control, just more misery. I just kept fighting my disease.
Any fight is a struggle. The key to sobriety is to quit fighting your alcoholism, quit trying to control your alcoholism, to accept it and surrender to it.
I know that doesn't seem to make a lot of sense, so let my explain it this way.
I like to think of Alcohol as Mike Tyson. And for years, I would put on my boxing gloves and get in the ring with Mike, confident that I could score a TKO. I would go round and round with Mike, sometimes getting some good punches in, escaping some powerful blows from Mike, not getting hurt too much.
But as time when on, Mike was getting more and more good punches on me, I wasn't moving quick enough, couldn't evade the hits. I started to get really hurt by Mike, but that just strengthen my idea that I could beat him.
Time and time again, I stepped into the ring, and time and time again, I staggered out, beaten and bloodied. But I would step back into the ring the following day, only to get the crap beat outta me once again, crawling out of the boxing ring a battered, beaten, bloody mess.
Then one day, I just got tired of getting the crap beat out of me trying to beat Mike Tyson. I decided I wasn't going to get in the ring that day. Hell, I wasn't even going to put on the gloves. Fuck Mike Tyson and my desires to give him a TKO. It wasn't worth the misery I was putting myself in. So I quit. I surrendered. And I haven't been bloodied and beaten since.
At some point in the alcoholism, I got tired of getting the shit beat out of me every time I drank. I gave up, I quit fighting, I surrendered.
I know surrender is a difficult thing to do, especially for an ego driven alcoholic like myself. I didn't like the idea of tucking my tail between my legs, waving a white flag and admitting defeat. So I found another definition of surrender. To me, surrender now means "no more fighting". I can't get hurt if I don't get in the battle, I can't get defeated if I don't engage in the war.
So I just don't get in the ring with Mike Tyson anymore, and I don't pick up the bottle anymore. "

When my brain is left untreated and my old alcoholic mind takes over his nickname is tyson.
Reading your post and others help me to remember where I was before I got sober in 2004 and keeps me strong...and to never forget what it used to be like while drinking, so I don't return..
