Bob, there was a member here who had bought the book and was all excited about it and came back some time later and said it was garbage. Can't remember the member's name, though.

The rehab run by this man and his son is called Passages and caters to the wealthy. Lots of celebrities go there. Fancy place.

Don't really know much about it outside of the little bit I've heard and read. Anyone who claims a cure, though, I'd be leery of!

I was over 20 yrs sober and a certified alcohol & drug abuse counselor and in 2007 I had to give it all up due to medical and mental problems and am now on social security disability and began drinking again about maybe 3 months ago I don't remember when. I had a sponsor and a homegroup and all the things you do in AA. I have the big Book, the 12 & 12, the 24 hour book, living sober book. etc and I find my self back where I left off over 20 years ago. At one time I had my own out-patient clinic and I had to let it go, due to my illnesses. I feel like a real hyocrite and do not want to start over and do a fourth and fifth step inventory again. I guess I just want to find an easier softer way. It says in chapter 5 of the big book "rarely have we seen a person fail who has followed our path, there are those who are less unfortinuate they seem to have been born that way, they suffer from grave and mental disorders. They can not be honest with themselves" and so on. I am just typing what is coming to my head and yes I have had a few drinks this evening. If anyone wnats to chat I may be here. I don't know. The guy on TV is trying to sell a book and if you can recall back in the 70's the Rand Group who thought they could change alcoholic in to responsible drinker was out of his f-----ing mind. About 800 died from alcoholism, another several hundred had to go back into treatment and a handful made it. It goes to show you that AA does really work if you want it to and that you can live a sober style. Don't ask me why I started to drink again I don't know and feel bad enough about it. I know I have to come clean with my sponsor and go back to my home group an pick up another 24 hour chip, if I can last the damn long. I use the serenity prayer a lot to help me with other disorders I just have to back in touch with my higher power. Thank you for letting me share.

mrbibs, forget what you knew, stick your pride in your pocket and get back to treating this disease like you're brand stinking new and you know nothing. I've been in your shoes.

Bigbear I'd guess duct tape has about the same success rate, and its cheaper.

Spend your $ on a Big Book rather than this trash. There have been many books over the years claiming to 'cure' addiction and it work for a few people but that's because they were probably misdiagnosed!

Mr Bibs, your pride is going to kill you. You drank again because you failed to keep in fit spiritual condition, pure and simple. You can sit on your butt drinking and feeling sorry for yourself and die of alcoholism, or you can accept spiritual help. Only two alternatives here!

I have the book but it has been some time since I read it. I believe his treatment was based on getting to the reason that a person drinks or drugs. It was different for AA. It was more of a psychoanalysis approach.

I tried the psychoanalytic approach for about 20 years, but I kept having these Freudian slips...

I think all treatment centers operate the same way. They deal with the depression, ptsd, etc, etc, which triggered the addiction but when I went through treatment AA was mandatory and necessary to maintain sobriety when we left treatment!.

Still that's not a cure, just control but one thing I do agree with in Nemo's article is how negative the alcoholism label is to an alcoholic!

If you put a label on someone, they will always live up to your expectations of them (sociology 101...:) ) Calling someone an alcoholic is just another trigger and that's just another trigger an addict need's to avoid. That's why I always call myself a recovering alcoholic and drug addict.

He claim's an 80 % success rate. Not sure what that means? 80 % will never relapse or 80 % won't relapse in the first year. If I had to pay that kind of money I would want a gurantee that I would never relapse or I want my money refunded.

What strikes me is that even while the Prentisses insist that alcoholism is not a physical disease, total abstinence from alcohol is required for their cure to work. Now why is that?
