From my exp. & what I was taught if we don't get the spiritual side of recovery will never find the peace & serenity which recovery is designed for.

Personally my own is my own HP, others is god or something else.

The thing that keeps me sober and in aa is the fact that my HP is my HP, just like yours. Also, the "journey" part. Because my relationship with my HP is fairly new, it keeps changing - sometimes closer to God sometimes just my own powerlessness. It is refreshing that I do not have to have the white-haired-long-robed God anymore. Whew! Sorry Sunday School Ladies, but you messed with my head for 20 years and I am working on that. Thank you HP! Thank you gjm!

When I arrived at the doors of recovery I was in no way looking for a spiritual life. I just wanted to stop drinking. I didn't know it then but despite my resistance my spiritual journey had already started.

Through the 12 steps a door opened to a spiritual world that I previously didn't even know existed. The 4th dimension if you like.

And now my whole way of life is about spirituality, there is no spiritual side to things, it is all spiritual, it gives me the guiding principles and access to power that I need to live in a way that is good for me and those around me. And it is an infinitely more satisfying way of life than I ever had before.

What I was scared of at the beginning was that I had to have the same spiritual awakening and journey as other people. What I have found is that by taking the action and being open minded about where it takes me I have had my own spiritual awakening and found my own spiritual path.

I believe that the root of the word salvation is "to come home". That is what i feel about my spiritual journey - that I am walking the path that I was meant to walk all along. It feels absolutely "right" to me and there is nothing comparable to that feeling.

I believe there is great comfort and hope from my experience and the experiences of many, many people like me. Because it doesnt matter where you start, if you embark on a spiritual journey and let go of trying to control the destination, you will end up on exactly the path you are meant to be on.

I firmly believe that my path might not be the same path as others are on but it is the right path for me

lisaBe, try the parochial schools. they (mean nuns) will scare a kid off the holy trinity pretty fast. yes, it IS a relief to have found a higher power that looks just like my dad did when he was alive. he doesn't cuss though. lol!

I agree with Nicky. I think there comes a time when you are truly working the Program and the Steps that all is spiritual in nature.

There was no room for a Higher Power when I was drinking. Today is a different day, though, and right now that's all I've got.

Your spiritual journey involves a true change of heart. That's what distinguishes it form simple "self-help". And God, your HP, the Power that is great than yourself- is capable of changing your heart so that you no longer have to rely on self will.
