Alcoholism Support Group
Alcoholism is the continued consumption of alcoholic beverages, even when it is negatively affecting your health, work, relationships and life. If you think alcohol is causing you to lose control, it's time to seek help. Our group is a safe place to vent, check in, get back up if you fall, and reach sobriety.

Yesterday was my wife's birthday and we had plans to go out to dinner with my son and her folks last night. Then, around 10 AM, she said, can you come into the kitchen, I need to talk to you. (We both have home offices, FYI).
She then proceeded with a pretty difficult confession/conversation. She has been getting more and more emotionally attached to one of her customers ( a guy she has known for more than 10 years) and things began to get somewhat physical recently, but not to the point of sex (neither the Bill Clinton definition or otherwise) but she said it was headed towards that.
In my alcoholic fueled zombieness for the past 5-6 years, I have forgotten and was too numb most of the time to respect my wife and give her the attention, kind words and just simple "presence" that any good husband and real man shows his wife.
In steps a man who is going through his own marital strife and they start to share more and more feelings with each other and a real attraction begins, not just a friend thing. He said he was falling in love with her and she admitted to me she was falling in love with him. (Tough stuff to hear). Cutting to the chase, they had decided to call it off before Christmas as my wife said she really wanted to give our marriage a chance. Whether or not they would have actually had sex by then, who knows. They probably would have. I do know that I have been the only man she has been with in her 51 years on earth and she never had any real serious boyfriends in HS and college, so I'm sure that plays a role somewhere in all of this (and she realizes that as well). She brought all of this up because my 17 year old son was suspicious of this guy and snooped on her phone texts. He found some sexting (no photos) and was rocked obviously. She decided that she had to tell me not so it unburdened her, but so that I could try to help him and put this thing in a context for him of our long-deteriorating relationship. I could go on and on, but the bottom line is that she says she is commited to our marriage, that she realizes she is asking to trust me on the fact that they were ending it anyway and that nothing sexual had happened yet. (I know there was kissing and I'm sure some "other stuff.") She was absolutely hysterical most of yesterday and I was telling her that I played a huge role in this with my years of benign neglect and not making her feel truly loved. This is ALL TRUE by the way and not something I am just agreeing with her on. She has had a chance many times over the years to act on things when male customers hit on her but never has. She is one of the few women in a hugely male dominated industry. I also trust her completely. She is just not the horny type or the flirtatious type or anything like that. She would have to develop a real deep and lasting bond with someone to sleep with them, but that's where this was heading. We came to the realization that A) -- it was fortuitous that she accidentally discovered how much I had been drinking 42 days ago which finally got me on a much overdue road to sobriety (or I would still be drinking today) and B) that as brutal and traumatizing as it was for my son to see these texts, it brought the situation to a head and forced her to tell me so that I could help save him as my son has a tremendous amount of anger towards her right now. I'm not really looking for feedback but just felt I had to do a mind dump on this thing. I'm about as at peace with it as I can be and take my share of the blame for creating the barren field that my wife had been living in emotionally so that another caring person could step into. Things have been a lot better between us the past 42 days and she realizes this and loves it. I think we will make it but this was a really strong jolt in the road. ALSO: I did not have the urge to drink and still don't. I got to my AA meeting every day and will continue to work the steps, go to meetings and come here to DS. Much love and support to you all, PG

check out that smoke ring. It tasted really good. I smothered it with Maulls BBQ sauce which is Local to St. Louis and one of the best I ever had.....

I was recently separated from my wife of 33 years and it's complicated. Anyway I rented a room about 15 minutes away and I see my kids about once a week. I see the people who own the house I live in once in a while but other than that I stay in my room where I do my cooking, wash dishes in the shower, read, color, and sleep. I get out at least once a day. I grocery shop and I attend 2 meetings...

Your poor son. I can only imagine. Also I'm sure that your wife is quite embarrassed. Just curious what industry your wife is in that in? Male dominated you said.
I think your reaction is commendable. Especially that you take some of the blame. As a wife that feels neglected in this capacity often it is refreshing to me that you realize that. My husband probably like you and many others only realizes these things when shit hits the fan. As in when I have a bag packed and one foot out the door. Just don't forget these things in a month or so when things HOPEFULLY get back on track. I pray they will. I hear a lot of love in this share. On both parts. GOOD LUCK my friend.
For me, acceptance was the key and turning over control of my life to my Higher Power, to fix what I couldn't fix myself was something that absolutely changed my life for the better.
If I could offer a suggestion, don't judge your wife. It's in the past. The past is dead. Don't even bring it up in conversation. Let it go. Focus only on the present. I would have a talk with the son. Heart to heart. Be honest.
These are just suggestions but I am sure you and your wife will make the right decisions and I will keep keep you and your family in my thoughts and prayers.
God Bless!
I wish you well.
I appreciate you sharing this b/c it has helped me prayers for you and your son and wife.

Stay strong. It's really working for you.
As for your son, I know he may feel angry, but really, it's not his business. Did her mothering of him ever falter due to that situation? Why is he so angry and taking it personally?
I think it's a learning lesson for us all that marriages have ups and downs...
Great job staying sober!
DS members who have insight from their past experiences can be JUST as good -- if not better -- than a therapist, IMHO.
I think it's about the quality of insight; not where it comes from. Yes, the APA is supposed to insure that a licensed therapist is that quality and the internet offers no system like that (except those who have been troll-like have most likely been kicked out), but if you have a little common sense, DS members can offer something an therapist can't- real world, no nonsense opinions. And a WIDE variety, too.
I've been in many situations where I throw out a scenario to DS and the variety of responses have helped me find out where exactly I stand on the issue. One therapist only offers one possible interpretation.
So yes, while DS is not a substitute for a licensed therapist, I have to disagree that we are not "real" and that we won't "help."
I've had many hugs and pms that have stated that I've saved them... Not patting myself on the back or anything, but if you feel that DS is not helpful, maybe it's best to not be a part of the dialogue.
(Unless you mean, Buddhacat, that some people on DS come here only for support, aka, enabling. In that case, I agree. I've been slammed several times and have been accused of not being "supportive" only when I have taken the time to respond to someone, challenging their current view. Then I'm the bad guy for daring to say, "Um... you may want to think about this in another way.")
At any rate, PG seems very level-headed and I feel he's on the road to true recovery and wellness, as is his wife and son. If anybody needs therapy, I'd say it's the son b/c find sexts on his mother's phone should not rock his world that much. I think it's a red flag for him and he needs to talk about where the REAL anger is coming from. Now, is that "real" advice??? I'm "only" a high school teacher and have seen it all... Would a "real" therapist think to say that??? See my point?
Sorry for the rant. Guess I'm cranky before my coffee! : P
