There are 3 of these houses in my neighborhood. The neo-liberal neighbors do the best that they can to get rid of them by calling code enforcement etc. So far they have been unsuccessful with the alcoholics, but they managed to get one of the half way houses for mental patients demolished because it was built 9" to close to the property line.
There attitude is "Its; a fine thing, but not in my neighborhood". These houses were here when the neighborhood was run down.
The yuppies bought the old homes here and fixed them up, changing the demography of the neighborhood.

My son stayed in a halfway house and then the next door sober house. poorly run, but a good enough start after jail. St. Christopher's in Garrison Ny, where he spent 3 months, has now opened a sober house on the same street! Nice neighborhood. The neighbors worry more about the houses filled with multiple families sharing the high rents than they seem to with the guys.
The halfway house was kept in much better physical shape than the sober living...but the men did a nice job decorating for Christmas, and doing the yards up in the nice weather. Nicer than many neighbors. I never heard of any complaints.
Success rate was pretty poor. Out of 25, my son is the only one sober, and 8 are dead (five years out)...but it was a better situation than most of them were in before.
I am glad I was lucky enough to be in my own home to get sober.

Re reply #2, Blueviolet, individually we cannot perhaps see how deadly alcoholism is but collectively we do, at least that's what I've observed. People don't just fall off the radar when you get to know them in person.
