Claire Booth Luce and Dorothy Parker had a running feud in the newspapers that went on for years. Parker, an atheist with a sharp tongue, would slash Luce in her syndicated column. Luce, a very public convert to Catholicism with the Time-Life fortune of husband Henry to play with, would shoot back by getting herself interviewed by the society page reporters. And so it went.

Well, legend has it that these two actually collided in front of a revolving door one day. With a broad smile, Claire Luce said, "Age before beauty, Miss Parker."

"Pearls before swine, Mrs. Luce," said Dorothy, and she went through the door.

I feel that Dorothy's depression and alcoholism actually sparked her famed cynicism and sardonic wit. If she was healthy, I don't know if she would have been so prolific or popular.

The alcohol and alcoholism fueled the Algonquin Round Table Group and what it was all about.

Nothing for nothing, i have a gentleman in my AA group who is a famous bass guitarist and music writer... He said he has to get sober to save his life at his age, and that his music career takes 2nd seat now. He started boozin and druggin for his inspiration, and apparently, he says, it worked, as he was nobody in music before "it".
he's in his sixty's now and plays in the NYC clubs a lot, and still writes a little, but as he said, his life is now more important than his inspirations!- good lesson!
