Difference between information and promotion. If Billy had said look at this site, it is the best 12 step site ever, it is guaranteed to get you sober, it is the only way to get sober, you must do it following the instructions on this site then that might qualify as promotion. But providing a link saying this is interesting - not promotion in my book. AA and the 12 steps are not meant to be secret - telling someone about them or providing information about them is not the same as promotion.

BBH - I think we have argued similar points in the past and never come to a place of agreement. Realise I am in danger here of repeating the same thing expecting a different result! lol The great thing is that we are all entitled to our own opinion.

I used to hold my opinions so tightly and hang on to them even in the face of conflicting evidence and facts. Somehow to change my opinion was to admit I had been wrong and of course there was no way I could do that.

Or I would go the other way and hold onto nothing, stand up for no principles. I would change my opinion according to your opinion because I was so worried that if I didnt agree with you you wouldnt like me.

I am pleased to say that it isnt like that anymore. My opinions are much more flexible and much more subject to change. I am no longer worried about admitting that I have changed my mind about something. But I can also stand up for things that I believe in and back them up with reasons for my beliefs. I am principled rather than opinionated today I hope.

I consider my opinions a lot more and am constantly re evaluating in the face of new information. I am considering different opinions on here all the time and spend a lot of time thinking about other people's perspectives and the reasons for them, why I believe what I believe, what evidence there is, in terms of AA what the traditions say etc. No doubt some of the things I think now will change at some time in the future.

The other thing is that I will share what I believe but it is with a view to giving information now rather than trying to convince people that what I believe is right. Attraction rather than promotion you could say!! If my opinion resonated with someone great but I am not out to prove anything or convince anyone. Very freeing.

Interestingly, the "AA Information about the Internet" page that I found includes information about AA websites and about social networking sites but doesnt include any guidance about non AA websites.

I have no desire to become involved in the rights and wrongs of the argument (there seems to be a lot of it about these days it must be a quiet time) but I have to say that I like Reply No. 13 concerning opinions.

One of the most liberating things I have found through AA is that opinions that I had set in stone can be changed. For example, Nicky has sometimes expressed opinions that in the past I would strongly disagree with concerning atheism etc. and there was a time when I would have reacted with self-righteous anger to such posts. I believe today that if we try to deny other people the right to hold a different opinion we are back to one of those reactions that made us reach for our old friend alcohol.
