Alcoholism Support Group
Alcoholism is the continued consumption of alcoholic beverages, even when it is negatively affecting your health, work, relationships and life. If you think alcohol is causing you to lose control, it's time to seek help. Our group is a safe place to vent, check in, get back up if you fall, and reach sobriety.

So been drinking very heavy every day (average a fifth more sometimes less sometimes - and drink most of the day) for about 6 weeks due to coping with some health issues and subsequent anxiety. Decided to start tapering off yesterday, had about half as much - and about 4-5 hours after last drink got rapid pulse and blood pressure went up quite high.
I decided to go to the hospital since I wasn't sure if it was physical withdrawal or panic attack (which I've never had to knowledge, although I do suffer from anxiety obviously). My heart rate and bp calmed some after a while, although still pretty high when at the er...and of course although this was morning and er wasnt crowded yet I wasn't considered urgent so had to wait for hours.
I ran a bunch of tests, basically same ones I did about 7 weeks ago when I was admitted for my chronic shortness of breath problem and some chest pain symptoms. Still found nothing conclusive. I didn't see my blood tests but doc said they were still fine despite my 6 week plus basic bender I've been on. Had to talk to a psych woman about the alcohol use.
Didn't really seem too concerned about the possibility of withdrawals despite my episode so they finally sent me home owing a bunch more money with no answers. Got another episode of high bp and pulse about 10 hours after the first one, this one maybe not quite as severe. Also haven't slept much over the last few months and not at all for a few days .
The doctor did give me a few librium pills, but only 6 25mg ones. I'm just wondering....will this be enough to keep from the worst of withdrawals if indeed that is what's happening? I need to get a pcp and follow up but who knows how long that will take. I did take one librium and slept hard for four hours..woke up for a bit and slept hard for another four hours...which is the best sleep I've had in months.
I still need to figure out my damn breathing problem, which lead to my anxiety which led to the heavy drinking. And now I've got to deal with the aftereffects of the booze and hoping I don't start back. I don't want to be stuck on benzos - but I guess 6 pills won't get me addicted. Just not looking forward to when they're gone in a few days.

check out that smoke ring. It tasted really good. I smothered it with Maulls BBQ sauce which is Local to St. Louis and one of the best I ever had.....

I was recently separated from my wife of 33 years and it's complicated. Anyway I rented a room about 15 minutes away and I see my kids about once a week. I see the people who own the house I live in once in a while but other than that I stay in my room where I do my cooking, wash dishes in the shower, read, color, and sleep. I get out at least once a day. I grocery shop and I attend 2 meetings...

Good Luck!
I wonder if you had drank before you went and maybe that is why your vitals appeared ok? It is when we are in withdrawal when everything goes hay wire.
They also gave me Librium to come home with and it did make me SO tired. But I think part of us being tired is what we have done to our bodies. Get some vitamins if you can...magnesium, B1 very important, Folic Acid, Vitamin C...drink Gatorade.
Those vitamins are all the vitamins they give you in detox. I have been 10 times over the years and I have done a lot of research and talking with Drs. I did not feel normal until yesterday - Day 8.....
Hopefully you feel better sooner. They gave me 2 Ivs..one with vitamins and one with fluids. They did not make me wait cause my bp was so low...I was walking DEAD. And my family has seen me like that many times.
I HAD 8 years sobriety. I want to feel good again and YOU DO TOO. YOU will just don't drink no matter what. I ALMOST drank that day they sent me home after the fluids because I didn't know what to do with myself after a 10 month bender...with barely any food...no showers in that time...maybe 6 showers....I was just dying.
EAT...make sure you EAT when you get cravings..it really changes your mindset. Let unimportant things go...I wouldn't open mail for like 5 days because I just couldn't....I put it in a pile and kept saying...at least your alive...you can deal with whatever is in there when you feel better.
The important thing for the next couple days if you can..is REST...Drink fluids...take vitamins...eat and try to shower if you can....My best to you. I KNOW this is HELL...its pure HELL. I'm sorry you didn't get treated well, they tend to treat us alcoholics like CRAP...everywhere..not fair...but a fact of life.
I was also given the 25 mg ones....I was given 12...but I was also drinking for 10 months everyday....all day....
And...drinking makes anxiety..especially mine (lol) 10x worse. You will notice as you continue to be sober your anxiety going down after about 3 days. You will then wake up in the middle of the night thanking your higher power that you are getting thru it...and feeling better. I have been thanking him almost every 15 minutes everyday.
Every time I bend down and pick something up, or get in shower, or eat...or take a ride in the car (and not to liquor store)....fold clothes, wash clothes, do dishes, talk to kids, family, boyfriend...I thank "Him".
Its NO PICNIC the first few days...I'm not going to minimize drinking 6 weeks..I KNOW that is a lot and a LONG time...I'm just going to say that I did it for 10 months...don't remember Christmas...let everyone down...didn't show up for commitments...and I did get thru it....to go to the ER was strong of you...and just think....we don't want that visit to be for nothing. They did give you something to help you....I really hope you make it....I wouldn't blame you if you didn't...its so freaking hard...it really is....I'll challenge you...I'm a girl...I got thru it...LOL....please try very hard :).

BUT this is only for me. It all depends if you need a medical detox or not. I tapered to a six pack a day. Got honest with my doctor as I did not need a medical detox but told her when I do stop what happens.
So this is day two sober. I have a bp medicine that I can take more of for those first three days. She gave me low dose xanax as that brings the bp down as well and helps with the anxiety thru the withdrawal.
lastly I am drinking tons of water that brings the bp down too. And taking a ton of vitamins with the water so far so good. The water is flushing and hydrating and the vitamins. I had to make a plan to stop and have everything in place.
But thats just me
So I do have some Seraquel for sleeping I basically kinda got all the meds from my doctor so I could do it on my own. Most doctors are willing to help you if you tell them what your doing. But going to an addiction doctor is probably best cause they know what you need. I have all the meds for a safe detox at home.
But like I said it all depends on how much alcohol your trying to come off of quickly. I googled safe detoxing
Hope it helps your not alone
