I got very sick and woke up one day in the hospital sober. I guess th's when I really put 2 and 2 together, really knew I was a drunk, and what I was doing to everyone around me, so I decided I wasn't going to drink or smke any more and I didn't. That was 2 years ago on April 17th

i was told off a liver specialist," the drink you had 26/9/06,it was your last"? it worked for me, i aint touched it since xx

How did I get sober: strong sponsorship.

What program? AA. Unity (I have a home group), Recovery (I continue to go through the 12 steps with my sponsor IN the Big Book), Service (I take others through the BB and 12 steps.)

It works - it really does.

I'm Dan and I'm an alcoholic with time on my hands right now, so I joined DS so I don't isolate so much and to help and be helped.

I'm sober today.

I went to inpatient treatment and have been attending AA and going to outpatient treatment.

I've been doing again what I've done in the past to remain sober and to grow.

I'm Betty and I'm a 35 year old wine glutton. My boyfriend and I have known eachother since childhood, we ran into eachother again a few years ago, we were both treading the edge of high functioning alcoholism so we grabbed hands and jumped off the edge together into full blown every night drunken stupidity> This was fun for awhile, but after three years and maybe ten nights sober, it was time. We realized that since we had jumped into that hole together, we had to climb out together. One of climbing out and leaving the other behind was not an option. Staying together in the hole was destroying everything. So we grabbed hands and began the arduous climb to the surface. He has his way of coping and I have mine, which includes this site. I don't even discuss with him that I come here. There are some things you just need to do your own way ya know? Anyway, that's all have to say about that for now.

hi i'm donna e and i am an alcoholic. i've been in recovery since 92 by the Grace of God and i try and live the program each and everyday of my life. i went into a treatment program and i am in the rooms of AA without this program i would not be alive today. i love giving back to the newcomer and reaching out to anyone who wants to live a clean and sober life. you can't keep it unless you give it away. i do service work in hospitals and institutions. i work as a paramedic and i also try and give back that way. iam proud to say that i am an alcoholic. love donna e

My name is Julie...I am a married stay at home Mom once again after quitting my job several months back. I am here because I thought I could use the support and maybe give a opinion or help someone out. I am sober today and have been since March 20, 2008...(not long but the longest I have been in 10 years!) I just made my mind up...that after finding out my blood pressure was sky high and that I have hypoglemicia as a result of drinking all the time that it was time to grow up and stop hurting myself. I am reading all kinds of books on the subject to stay sober and have a LOT of support from my husband, kids and friends. I am not in AA or any recovery program as of now. I hope to continue doing everyday what I know I need to do...by reading and by the support groups that I have.

Quanna, alcoholic. I enjoy and learn from what people post here on DS.
I am sober today, and got that way by finally accepting help and stopped trying to 'get over it' by myself. I am go to AA meetings, have a homegroup, work the steps with a sponsor. It is just over three months, but so far it is working very well.

o.k. you asked for it. are you prepared to read a drunks equivalent to "war and peace"? when i first found this site i was sober but not working a program of recovery. though I've been in and out of the rooms of a.a. i didn't want in any circumstances to be part of that group. i criticized how some looked, how some talked, judged education, marital status, spiritual beliefs, felt i was brighter, smarter, infinitely more talented, and sincerely knew--in my heart of hearts-- i could figure this out on my own. i went through periods of sobriety but i could never stay stopped and temporarily would run back to the rooms of a.a. after another overdose (alcohol and/or drugs), suicide attempt, hospitalization, or incarceration due to dui or--get this-- solicitation to buy narcotics on a bicycle at 3 a.m. in the morning. i cleaned up for an infantismal moment and then off on another run. i thought i was not a skid row drunk because i have always been professionally employed. I've been a flight attendant for 22 years and currently i work as an account executive (though I'm on leave from the second and on furlough from the first). you see I've been enabled and protected from the truth of my life by well meaning friends and co-workers. how could i be a skid row drunk when i had some literary success? how could i maintain a job for all those years and be a skid row drunk? how could i sit on the board of directors for a battered woman's shelter and be a skid row drunk? well, i have a union who saved my job whenever i was strung out and even homeless. i had friends who delighted in watching the exploits of someone who took this disease farther and further than they could ever imagine and were good at bailing me out of jail or feeding me or giving me a sofa to sleep on. i had great insurance with the airline--will again when i return--that paid 1/2 million dollars in keeping me alive over a relatively short period of time. i have/had employers who loved me to death. for example, my current employer promoted me in a few short weeks to a position directly under her and immediately the conventions started. it was at a resort in disney world that i picked up a drink again--something about the open bar at 7 a.m. i maintained for awhile but then i included-- as always-- the other side dishes (drugs) and finally i was caught drinking a bottle of wine in my office. my boss found me help, calls almost every day to check on me, has kept my job open, sends me inspiring emails and just generally refuses to see just what i have become; the utter seriousness of this thing i have, the annihilation of the woman i once was. but i know. i am--regardless of exterior--a skid row drunk. i walk into the rooms of a.a. today and i see my brothers and my sisters and we are bonded in a way even genetics could not touch. i am grateful to be given the chance to write a different epilogue than the one i originally predicted. i am no longer lost in a different language. i am home. devon

I am sober today and have stayed that way thanks to the Higher Power with which I have reconnected thanks to AA.
