Alcoholism Support Group
Alcoholism is the continued consumption of alcoholic beverages, even when it is negatively affecting your health, work, relationships and life. If you think alcohol is causing you to lose control, it's time to seek help. Our group is a safe place to vent, check in, get back up if you fall, and reach sobriety.

Figured I would share this to just help myself get it out some more...not sure...be one thing amazed me....I never thought of drinking! Amazing!!
The other day I found out my mother has breast cancer...I think I am still in shock a little bit. We go Monday to find out more details.
But what I am really grateful for is that I am sober right now! That I had my sponsor and other women to turn to...Women that I trust and who love me.
That I will be able to be there for her and not out drinking...I can let this be about her and not my drinking drama.
I have done two 4th step on her, anger and guilt and that has allowed me to also to want to be there for her even more.
Someone did tell me today though, that when people drink it is not usually over something that happened that day but a week or two ago...I know I have to stay on top of my program...it does scare me....
Ok, not sure where I am going with this...But how amazing that I don't want to drink over this and that I can be there for her, sober!! I am so greateful for the program.

I invited Bill to have dinner with me last Sunday. He wasn't willing to drive 7 hours to mid Michigan and teased me with his beautiful ribs!!! So, of course I ate alone and had cedar salmonĀ

But what you said rings true - I have had a few of those things happen where I look back and say `wow, I actually didn`t even think about drinking over that`. And I think it`s because of what you mentioned - you did 4th steps. Which means you work the steps. And for those newcomers or those struggling, this goes to show that if rigorously honest, working the steps of the program do work.
You also spoke of being of service to your mom, by being truly present for her and doing what it is to make her feel that you are there for her. This is such a turnaround from our selfish self-centered way when we were in the throes of our addiction.
It`s a great testament to your program and the person you`ve become. Thanks for sharing!

I just celebrated my 2 year remission(after radiation and chemo) from breast cancer so I agree that it is not necessarily a death sentence.
As a mother, I was grateful that my son was old enough to take care of himself so I could focus on me. So the fact that you are sober is a blessing to your mother.
Prayers to your mother.

Prayers for both you and your mom.
I have gotten away from meetings for awhile now - and your post reminded me of just how much I still need the program.
I am going to a meeting tomorrow. I'm in a new location and haven't been to one here - but I'm sure going to be at one tomorrow. Thank you very much for your post.
I wish your mum well in her journey and if I may will add her to my prayer list.
Finally as BW said cancer today is not a death sentence, my mother in law had breast cancer over 30 years ago and the old battle axe is still annoying the hell out me lol.

I think you are right to be so aware of dangers now, and work as hard on taking care of yourself as you want to work on taking care of mom.
Thanks for a great post that makes me thankful for another sober day.
It is a gift of the program to actually be here for people we love, when they need us.
I have a deep regret about missing my grandmothers funeral and her old old age. I just couldnt be bothered to get on a plane and spend time with this woman who loved me so much, and who I absolutely adore. I had to do a 9th step letter. I wish it could have been in person.
So so grateful to have a program to work this stuff through.
So happy to hear your story even though I know its about "bad" news. Hopefully she will survive for years and years. My aunt is a 20 year survivor...and still going strong.
