It's not like a regular chat room. I don't understand how to have a conversation or is it just replying. I don't get it. Brain dead, I guess.
I'm used to seeing live chat so everyone can chat at the same time, etc.

I am somewhat new myself, but I know a little. There are several ways to communicate on these forums. What you started here is a "discussion", but it is on real-time like a chat room. Unfortunately, you cannot chat with a group of people, it is limited to one on one.

This site rocks, super-helpful in my recovery... I find it much easier to talk about my insecurities about certain on this site rather than an AA meeting... However, the experience differs for everyone... My advice, give it a chance, give out some hugs, meet some new friends.. It just might work for you!

The postings often become chat forums. You could message someone, that'll keep it private. You could go back and forth with hugs, that way you could talk to a few ppl at once. You could also request a live chat, but you usually have to have that person on your friend list in order to do that. You could request a friendship on someone's profile, then if they accept you're on each other's lists. Friendships only work both ways, you're either each other's friends or not (eg, if "Joe" is on your friend list, you're on his too).
