Alcoholism Support Group
Alcoholism is the continued consumption of alcoholic beverages, even when it is negatively affecting your health, work, relationships and life. If you think alcohol is causing you to lose control, it's time to seek help. Our group is a safe place to vent, check in, get back up if you fall, and reach sobriety.

Hi --
I know I am posting a lot today, and I always do on my "day 1" but this time I hope to stay more active on these boards.
Anyway, the purpose of this post is to talk about my history of drinking a little and get some perspective from the rest of you.
I just turned 44. I had never been a big drinker and so I wanted to look back on when I started to drink regularly. I realized it was a slow process.
In 2001 I started dating a girl who would have wine with dinner. Usually white or rose and typically cheap wine. I would mix this with fruit juice and or Sprite. If we went out I would sometimes have one drink but most times I would not drink at all since I was typically driving. For reasons having nothing to do with alcohol this relationship was a tough one and ended in late 2002.
At some point in 2003 or 2004 I started going to a Sushi bar with a friend on that served Blood Orange Margarita's. I knew 2 was my limit but I know there were times when I was not driving that I would have a third. Until 2006 I was renting a room in a house with roommates, one of whom was a recovering alcoholic and so we never had alcohol in the house.
In 2006 I bought my own place and at the same time I met my now wife and my social life expanded and the opportunity to drink more was available and so I did.
And then earlier this year - around the 1st anniversary of my Dad passing away - I made my first attempt to quit drinking. So basically from October of 2006 to January of 2015 my drinking went from "normal" to out of hand.
Since I turned 35 in October of 2006 I know that I lived most of my life with little to no alcohol and so I know that I can go back to being that person who doesn't want it.
I realize that I am the type of person who will consume something if it is made available to me and II enjoy the taste. Food, candy, soda, alcohol. I have also cut out soda from my diet since I turned 41 so again I know that I can cut out alcohol.
I know this is a long post and it was probably more for "me" than anything and it is something I will probably come back and read in the future.

Dick Van Dyke’s path to sobriety was a turning point in his life and career. Here’s what happened:How He Got SoberStruggles and Realization: Van Dyke began drinking as a teenager, largely to cope with shyness and social anxiety. Alcohol made him feel more comfortable in social settings, but over time, his drinking spiraled out of control. By his mid-40s, he recognized that he had an addictive...

I find that I had to replace the booze with something. This turned out to be a program of aa. It gives me strength and holds me accountable.
I also stopped maturing when I was drinking. I was 40 when I quit. You can and will do it if you decide to. I made a commitment to not drink no matter what. Things have come and gone but I have made it thru sober.
C'mon!

It's up to you, my friend. Good luck!

Stop looking back at why and look forward at how this will be your last day 1. Work a program, get a sponsor, be in a community of recovery. Best of luck.
