The Alcohol works as an anaesthetic and numbs the nerve cells in our sex organs. Alcohol can stop men from getting and keeping an erection, the testicles can shrink, and sperm count drops. Also the lost of sex drive could be linked with depression, which can completely wipe out the need for sex.
The source of the problem could be physical or psychological. Try to get your friend to approach a Dr and a Counsellor. The loss of self worth, loss of identity the deterioration of his mental health could be a major factor. If he is still drinking, then that has to be addressed first of all.

I don't think women realize how detromental this is to a man. The thought never leaves our minds and to be unable to perform is one of the most detromental things that can happen. I haven't drank in almost 3 years and I have been affected with this now for about a year. I am on anti-depresants and I think that has an effect. I plan on getting off them at the end of this month and I hope it helps. I also think that a lot of support from a good woman would fix it which I do not have. This is a huge blow to a man because we are no longer usefull in our minds and along with that comes many other problems both mental and physical. It is not a nice place to be.

Alcohol and anti-depressants can have an affect while taking them. You mentioned planning to get off them at the end of this month. Is that in consultation with your doc? Some meds have reduced labido as a side effect (for some) and others don't so just a change in meds may work.

As far as alcohol use having an effect when not under the influence of alcohol, that's definitely a new one to me. Have you been on the meds for about a year or were you effected before the meds?

I think this is an issue for ladies too.

I know in my drinking career I was never interested in sex, but if i had it I was probably drunk.

Now Im sober, and I honestly have no interest which would be fine but im in a relationship.

I also think most addicts suffer from low esteem issues. So alcohol removed.... anxiety etc, it can be a bit of a sensitive issue.
