So I decided I had had enough and plugged the jug. Now after awhile I wonder why I waited so long. Life got better and things still happen but I don't have to drink over them.

The most important thing to know is it is not anything wrong with you it's just a issue with alcohol. And more importantly being an alcoholic doesn't make you any less of a person. Actually I found that when I realized I WAS an alcoholic then I was able to work on what I could do to get Thru it and back to living.

I cried when I read your question & 1is2many's response. Yesterday was my 30 day sober mark - for about the 12th time...I relapsed again last night. So today is day one again. I've never been to a meeting. I've been trying to do it on my own. I can't do it alone. Today I reached out to family and tomorrow is my first meeting. I'm getting a ride there.
While some quit on their own, many others fail. And while many fail in AA, many more succeed.
Surround yourself who are proof that a life of sobriety is great. Unfortunately here you get some help, and a lot of people coming here, who aren't committed to living life sober.
It looks like you definitely do have a problem with alcohol and the exact nature of that problem will determine what you need to do.
It may be that you are just a heavy drinker who uses alcohol in order to deal with lifes challenges and if that is the case you should be able to either cut back on your drinking or quit entirely without too much effort. However, from reading your post I would say that you are probably an alcoholic and if that is the case you will need to take an entirely different approach.
Please educate yourself about alcoholism and you will then see the way ahead. If you are an alcoholic you cannot drink safely, end of story. Like you, I had no idea why I drank to excess and why I could not stop drinking when I wanted to stop. When I went to meetings of Alcoholics Anonymous I learned the exact reasons and also I learned about a possible solution.
