Coming up on 3 weeks - doing well

So when I started again... I wrote this letter. Perhaps it will help someone today.


Dear Alcohol, When we met, you were wonderful and brilliant, you gave me the ability to forget all the horrible things in my past and be one of the crowd.  But then you changed, you began to control me and instead of being happy and friendly I began to use you for stress, anxiety and I lashed out atthe  people I loved... Yet still I stayed with you.  Now you are damaging my health and you control my whole life, my being, you make me hate myself and yet my thoughts all day long are about my battles with you...I make deals with you...trying to get back some of who I was, some of the control over my own life.


You have robbed me of who I wanted to be...I now take that back. Our battles are over. We are done.

oh and for added effect - I rolled up the letter and put it in the last bottle of wine (which I dumped out) and then I wrote Suicide across the label - I have the bottle on my bed stand - it reminds me of what I am really fighting for.

Love this post! Writing a letter to alcohol was one of the things we did in treatment. It brings out the reality of it all. I don't remember what I did with the one I wrote as it was over 8 years ago, but I remember reading it to my group and some of the women began crying so I stopped reading and the counselor told me to continue. When I finished reading it, everyone in my group commented on it. Everyone there could relate in some way. It was all good!

I've passed 2 weeks, coming on 3 weeks also. We wanted it badly enough and figured out how to power past the drinking

Congrats seaQ - it is getting easier... but I still read the letter when I feel tempted... a week ago I carried the bottle everywhere with me to remind me of the burden of alcohol - whatever it takes.

You are right, lostgirl!!! WHATEVER IT TAKES!!! This is working for you. Reminders of the past are some of the strongest help! I love the message in a bottle! Thank you for sharing that one!!!!

Great letter. I journaled a lot in my early days and it hgelps me to read them occasionally. I hear how desperate and out of control I felt. At a little over 6mo I feel serenity and calm again. I never want to go back

I copied out your letter to a Word doc on my computer desktop, right next to 'Goodbye my liquid friend', which someone posted a few weeks ago. These files are inspirational to me, and remind me of what was, but will never again be. Thank you for sharing it!!!!

Awesome to have that inspiration. I have a friend who just took 6 years and he wrote a letter to his then girlfriend "alcoholina". After 35 years he broke off that relationship. I still get chills when he tells that story.

I am going to remember "goodbye to alcoholina" that made me smile. What would be a good name for break a breakup with your alcohol boyfriend... not so easy... glad I kept mine gender independent. Happy Saturday everyone!

    check out that smoke ring. It tasted really good. I smothered it with Maulls BBQ sauce which is Local to St. Louis and one of the best I ever had.....

     I was recently separated from my wife of 33 years and it's complicated. Anyway I rented a room about 15 minutes away and I see my kids about once a week. I see the people who own the house I live in once in a while but other than that I stay in my room where I do my cooking, wash dishes in the shower, read, color, and sleep. I get out at least once a day. I grocery shop and I attend 2 meetings...
