I've never been a fan of camping but my son (who does not drink) is a avid primitive camper. He lives in LA and knows of some incredible places to pitch a tent, hike, build a fire, prepare food and be very close to nature. We are in the beginning stages of planning a 5 day trip out west.
I'm not sure where yet but I will keep my DS friends up to date as things develop.

You might be surprised by how much you enjoy camping. Many people have been dragged kicking and screaming to their first camping trip only to find out how healthy and freeing it is to exist outdoors under the stars.

There is something truly magical about cooking over a camp fire while enjoying the sounds of Mother Nature.

Hopefully no bugs or bears though! Good luck!

Giday CG, I have a love of camping and I am just now getting the wife into it.

The wife and I have just returned from a camping trip and enjoyed it immersible. Something we would not have enjoyed if still in my cups.

I reckon that this will be a great bonding experience with your son and an experience that both of you will look forward to doing again soon.

Hiking has been a favorite pastime of mine. I hiked in the San Cruz Mountains in Northern California,, Mongolia and India. It is great for sobriety.

I am missing my favorite camping spot like CRAZY right now! It is a cabin near a gigantic lake near where my son lives in Wichita Kansas.

I can smell the hot dogs and steaks cooking over the open flame now.

Not completely rustic as the cabin has all the comforts of home. But still the same feel.

It used to be all about drinking too much when we went there.

I am looking forward very much to experiencing it sober! YAY!
