Alcoholism Support Group
Alcoholism is the continued consumption of alcoholic beverages, even when it is negatively affecting your health, work, relationships and life. If you think alcohol is causing you to lose control, it's time to seek help. Our group is a safe place to vent, check in, get back up if you fall, and reach sobriety.

For those who feel uncomfortable with AA and the 12 steps, Annie published some alternatives in one of her daily newspaper columns.
In case you missed it here they are:
Moderation Management (Moderation.org)
Hams (Harm Reduction, Abstinence and Moderation Support) hamsnetwork.org
Smart Recovery (Self Management and Recovery Training) smartrecovery.org
Rational Recovery (rational.org)
Sober Recovery (soberrecovery.com)
SOS (Secular Organizations for Sobriety) sossobriety.org
LifeRing (lifering.org)
Women For Sobriety (womenforsobriety.org)
This list doesn't include all of them but you can find more resources through the Substance Abuse and Mental Heal Services Administration (samhsa.gov) at 800-662-4357
I have no experience with any of these because AA and the 12 steps were helpful to me. IMHO it's whatever works for you. I hope those seeking assistance find whatever is palatable to them.
Good Luck!

check out that smoke ring. It tasted really good. I smothered it with Maulls BBQ sauce which is Local to St. Louis and one of the best I ever had.....

I was recently separated from my wife of 33 years and it's complicated. Anyway I rented a room about 15 minutes away and I see my kids about once a week. I see the people who own the house I live in once in a while but other than that I stay in my room where I do my cooking, wash dishes in the shower, read, color, and sleep. I get out at least once a day. I grocery shop and I attend 2 meetings...

I didnt try any of these either. I did try all sorts of self help -- -as in trying to help myself. I read a ton about alcoholism and addiction. I also saw a counselor who specialized in alcohol and drug abuse. He recomended antabuse. I'm grateful for his help, but another drug didnt feel like the right solution.
AA has been.
~~~Peace~~~
Or do you equate "getting sober on your own" with not talking to anyone -- maybe just living in a hole in the ground?
We are here because we are all trying to find a way to get and remain sober. It is a terrible, devastating, disease. And yes, I call it a disease, contrary to others on this board that want to call it.
It is just the wording of everything that causes so much conflict because we don't know how to express what we are feeling, so it comes out all screwy to the other person listening or reading.
In my opinion, it is all a spiritual and personal matter. It is just finding it that causes all the problems.
God Bless!
