Hi all, I hope I'm posting in the right section here, but I can't seem to find alcoholic hepatitis in any support group, and, since this particular instance is with a man who has been a heavy drinker for a fair chunk of his life, I figured I'd try here..

The story: My future brother in law (let's call him Jack) has been a hardcore drinker for at least 20 years (he is about 40).
After a long, rocky, painful and draining process, he FINALLY quit drinking. Cold turkey.

I don't know all the details, but from what my sister has told me, he pretty much immediately started to go downhill, health-wise. He finally ended up in the hospital, yellow all over (I believe the term is jaundiced?)- his eyes, his skin, everything. It was obvious that the problem was his liver.

From my sisters recollection, the doctor told Jack that he was suffering from alcoholic hepatitis. His liver is inflamed, and he feels awful. He was discharged from the hospital but, between his general uncooperative nature towards doctors (emphasized, I'm sure, but how cruddy he feels - the worse it gets, the less he wants to cooperate)and the fact that he doesn't have health insurance, he is, I'm sure you can imagine, rather frustrated to be told that he needs to go to all of these specialists..

So I was wondering if anyone here has had experience with this liver inflammation. There's information all over the place, but we have no idea how reliable any of it is. Apparently, there are foods that are particularly hard on the liver, there are other foods which are beneficial to him- but there are so many ideas out there it's making our heads spin!

I'm hoping that someone with experience in this is, perhaps, willing to exchange messages with me.
Please note: I'm not trying to 'save' Jack. He's a grown man. I'm not looking or asking for a cure. I just am hoping that someone on here knows where I can turn to learn the little things that he can do to make things easier on his liver, in addition to seeing a doctor (whenever he can afford one).
