Alcoholism Support Group
Alcoholism is the continued consumption of alcoholic beverages, even when it is negatively affecting your health, work, relationships and life. If you think alcohol is causing you to lose control, it's time to seek help. Our group is a safe place to vent, check in, get back up if you fall, and reach sobriety.
I just joined the group but have been sober since 1988. My program of recovery has been and what gets me through.
My husband passed away on May 13, 2007. He had been sober for 20 years and started using again. We were separated and he finally had gone to rehab in March. It seemed he was finding his program again. Then he mixed prescription pills that he shouldn't have. He had been suffering from major depression and couldn't cope with the loss that the disease was bringing to him.
We have 3 beautiful children together (11, 5 and 3) and our life together was not enough to keep the disease from taking him. I wanted it to be but it wasn't.
His family is blaming me for his death. And I spend time wondering if there was something more I could have done. We agreed when we hooked up 18 years ago that we would never work each other's programs.
One day at a time and faith in my higher power is keeping me upright.

He talked about how when we drink we go on a diagonal line down and down. Then we get sober and the line goes up and then horizontally across, like at the top of a page.
But the diagonal line keeps going down and down as the years of sobriety continue. Then if the person slips they go down again.
Except instead of going down to where they were they go down to where the continuing down line is. As if they had kept drinking and continued going down.
Except now they shock their system with going down to that low level in such a short time. The shock to their system usually kills them. That is why many old timers die if they drink and use again.
The family blames you because they don't have a clue about what is going on and what really happened. My heart goes out to you.
The best thing you can do for yourself and your idiot loved ones is to stay clean and sober one more day at a time.
And he said that to me as well when he left the house. He told me he felt like he was right back where he started 20 years ago and he was.
The big difference was that his body was 20 years older and more damaged and couldn't take it.
In some ways it shakes your faith and in others there but for the Grace of God go I has never been a truer statement.
Some days I feel sorry for his family to have to live with such anger and resentement and in other days I feel sorry that it is directed at me and my kids.
Have to rework the let go and let God piece in a big way.
