Acute Alcoholic Hepatitis

Three years ago a friend of mine came over and told me she was an alcoholic.  She acted surprised when I told her I have known for 15 years.  I asked her if she worried about what the alcohol was doing to her internal organs and she said she never thought about it.  She is a lovely lady, works a professional job with a family who loves her dearly.  Family has tried many interventions.  Fast forward to today; she has been in the hospital for a month and a half with acute alcoholic hepatitis.  She has had several bleeds that were treated and has been on IV however barely eats.  She cannot walk.  We are getting very worried.  Everyone feels like they didn't do enough to help her.  Do people recover from this liver disease when it's gone so far.

The body can and will heal itself IF the booze stops going in. Sometimes it is too late and too much damage has occurred. Prayers.

Know that it has helped me to not drink today hearing this news. Prayers.

" Everyone feels like they didn't do enough to help her." It sounds as if the family tried plenty. Alcoholics (as well as the disease, alcoholism) are a difficult bunch; often they continue to drink no matter what. I do not go to AA meetings on Fridays, and I agree with 1is2many...your sharing has helped me stay away from the first sucker drink. I am sorry your friend, and you, are going through this,

You really need to let go of all that guilt! Watching my own relative commit a slow suicide with the bottle always made me feel guilty that I did not do enough to stop the madness and it affected my life in the most negative ways culminating with my own addictions many years later that nearly took my life. Fortunately, I went through a treatment program, addiction counseling and I attended AA meetings, for many years. It took that much work to learn to forgive myself and to let go of the guilt!

There is absolutely nothing you could have done to stop her from drinking. It sounds like her cirosis is getting worse... Eventually, it reaches a point where the only thing that will help is a liver transplant, or a miracle We will keep her in our thoughts and prayers.

    check out that smoke ring. It tasted really good. I smothered it with Maulls BBQ sauce which is Local to St. Louis and one of the best I ever had.....

     I was recently separated from my wife of 33 years and it's complicated. Anyway I rented a room about 15 minutes away and I see my kids about once a week. I see the people who own the house I live in once in a while but other than that I stay in my room where I do my cooking, wash dishes in the shower, read, color, and sleep. I get out at least once a day. I grocery shop and I attend 2 meetings...
