We make up name calling when someone does not fit our standards maybe.

Move on-one person's "nazi" maybe another's lifesaver, and one person's "dry drunk" may be a beacon of health for another.

well I know some people we consider big book thumpers.....that does not mean AA Nazi...that term is more for someone who is much too controlling which is what it seems your first sponsor had in his life....I have a great friend who is a big book thumper and enjoy everything he teaches me about how to be a good AA and one of GOD's good kids....hugs bill

i didnt mean to offend anyone. i read that on here and i thought it was an interesting perception. like on sienfeld. the "soup nazi". i had been seeing a woman(alcoholic, my opinion) for a year and she is always going on about her girls. they were fashionistas she always says. i tell her im a fashion-nazi. haha. a joke. i agree its too political for a forum about sobriety and alcoholism

The question I like to ask is "what is real - qulaity sobriety OR - what is real quality of living (due to not drinking alcohol). It will be 19 years for me next february. Im not a traditionalist..in any shape or form. I attend AA meetings. However, I cant and I dont delude myself into believing that anyone - no matter how long they have 'been of the alcohol' have "quality" sobriety. The/A Great principle to live by is "freedom". If someone isnt allowing you or wnating you/me/anyone to just "Be,..the bets them they can be". Then - the issue is with them and not the other person?? ;-) There are many different types of individual in AA. Been told its just a small cross section of society in itself. Liek any 'controlling' peple I need to be mindful of what they are saying and is my response going to empower me OR is what they are saying for an ego trip for them. There are some (not sure if many would be appropriate) in my area where I stay, who, if "its not done there Way- its not the 'right' way". I have to and choose to have a laugh at that. Why, in Gods name woukd I take anyone seriously who, woukd get annoyed or feel a sanctimonious righteousness if its not done 'there way'. If whatever someone is doing, in there endeavour to have a life without alcohol, and it is working and it is making them fel Go(o)d then who am I to want to question that. Phewww, lol :-) :-) enough of that. Im away to let go and to give some thanks of gratitude.

What I tried to say as a response to your thread was "I have seen others who like to influence others to 'see things there way'...if others want to follow 'that way' ..thats thee choice. If I dont want to go your way, does that mean my ways wrong? We all have our own paths to follow...and thats okay :-) Aye, Ive sure got a thinking problem as well :-) All the best

drc, "nazi" is a not as derogatory word to us in the U.S as it is to those across the pond because it wasn't our country being destroyed during WWII. Also because the term "nazi" implies pure evil.

I agree with your last 4 lines. That's been my experience.

I guess if someone is a controlling piece of shit, all the AA in the world ain't gona fix it... ya can polish a turd all day, but it's still just a turd... and that's one of the things I don't get about AA... I've heard it before- "the steps won't fix crazy", and "there's good and bad people in the rooms just like there is anywhere else", etc, but... I thought that was the whole point of the program, to change people so they won't be shitbags anymore, get'em liking themselves more, etc that way they won't feel like they gotta drink to escape from themselves...

my experience was that people couldnt change me. my ex tried for three yrs. only my Higher Power could change me. the folks at AA just showed me the path they took. im powerless over alcohol and people. so i give my burden to my Higher Power and i dont worry about trying to change other people. not my job. that frees me to b happy

I totally see your point and I agree with you - some people want to control new people entirely too much.

When it is all about their need to control, rather than what is good for the new person - it does not do the new person a lot of good and it can actually do some harm.

I'm glad you saw the light before it took a toll on your sobriety.

I've heard the term AA Nazi before - and there are times it applies, imo.

There's even a name for using Nazi on the internet. Godwins or something similar. Mostly when it's used people don't see past the word nazi so its use can lose purpose of any meaningful discussion. Personally, we use the term here but mostly towards parking ticket officers. If someone mentioned to me that they were offended or found the term distasteful, I'd be mindful of that.
