Alcoholism Support Group
Alcoholism is the continued consumption of alcoholic beverages, even when it is negatively affecting your health, work, relationships and life. If you think alcohol is causing you to lose control, it's time to seek help. Our group is a safe place to vent, check in, get back up if you fall, and reach sobriety.

Good for you!!

Honestly, I never thought I'd make it this far but I realize now the roadblock to getting here was myself. I think I've commented about this before but in the past my attitude was that I could "control" my drinking. This time I FINALLY accepted that I could not do that and so I had to STOP completely.
Having accepted my reality I've achieved more than I've ever achieved previously. Thanks to all of you as well as seltzer and ginger alert.
Here's to the next 30 days!
PS - I realize that if I have a bottle of gingerale open I feel compelled to drink it, just as I would a bottle of wine. So while I'm happy to be drinking something without alcohol I'm still concerned about my compulsion to finish whatever is open.
Good to be aware of your need to finish whatever open bottle is in front of you. For now, it might be enough to recognize it, and make sure that any open bottle is water or soda. Over time you can work on this, but don't get too concerned now. For now keep your focus on no alcohol, no matter what. At least that's what I think I would do.
I'm wondering if the similarities between the method and sort of visual experience of the ginger ale is part of why I feel compelled to drink the whole bottle. Granted, its only 1 liter so its not a lot of ginger ale. We have mostly clear cups which is why I mentioned the color / visual aspect.
I will made a conscience change to using one of the few frosted / color cups we have and see if my behavior with the ginger ale changes.
Another thing with the seltzer is that drinking it from the bottle makes it seem that it has more bubbles then the ginger ale over ice. Because of that the seltzer tends to make me fill "full" and so I'm not as driven to drink it as quickly.
Although in a given day, after I finish my coffee I drink seltzer non-stop until dinner time and over that 7 or 8 hour period I will typically drink an entire bottle of seltzer. The ginger ale is over 4 or 5 hours so perhaps I"m over thinking this.

Congrats Rich. Keep moving forward. Its always good to see a person reach new heights.
You know what works for you and what doesn't. Visual cues are huge impulses for sure. I love Pelligrino with a lime or orange slice. But that is just me. I also love really good ginger beer (not ginger ale) as it has a real ginger bite to it and is a bit drier than ginger ale. You can also cut that with a splash of seltzer water and it stretches both things further. I also drink several glasses of warm water with lemon and fresh ginger slices. I have beomce a ginger freak in my sobriety. :) Yours in the journey, PG
