Alcoholism Support Group
Alcoholism is the continued consumption of alcoholic beverages, even when it is negatively affecting your health, work, relationships and life. If you think alcohol is causing you to lose control, it's time to seek help. Our group is a safe place to vent, check in, get back up if you fall, and reach sobriety.

I went to my morning meeting as I do each day and picked up on something that was said.
One part of the topic was resentments. I shared that I was abused as a child and that I hold resentments 50 years later.
Talk about open up the flood gates!!!
Two people were going to walk out when the topic morphed into abuse. I tell you what, never again. All and all it didn't cause me to drink.

check out that smoke ring. It tasted really good. I smothered it with Maulls BBQ sauce which is Local to St. Louis and one of the best I ever had.....

I was recently separated from my wife of 33 years and it's complicated. Anyway I rented a room about 15 minutes away and I see my kids about once a week. I see the people who own the house I live in once in a while but other than that I stay in my room where I do my cooking, wash dishes in the shower, read, color, and sleep. I get out at least once a day. I grocery shop and I attend 2 meetings...

Something similar happened at a meeting that I go to every week, although I was not there that particular night.
It is good to talk about such things but maybe not good to go into too much detail at meetings as it can strike a raw nerve with some people, which is understandable. The best way to approach it is with a sponsor, where you can go into as much detail as you want. I have a couple of friends who live many miles apart and who have never met but their experience of dealing with childhood abuse and resentment gives me great inspiration. What I have learned from them is that it is possible to deal with that resentment through the Steps and to even forgive the abuser. However, abuse leaves deep emotional scars and it is wise to also seek help from professionals who have experience in that field.
It may be wise for you to keep talking about your childhood experience and to deal with the emotional fallout that comes from it but to do it with a sponsor and a counsellor rather than at the meetings. Well done for not drinking over this incident.
I tend to save the more personal disclosure for my sponsor or trusted friends and just share in a general way at meetings about how the programme has changed my outlook, what problems the spiritual principles have helped me with and so on.
In the early days I did not have that experience of sobriety over time but I was still very mindful of what I disclosed about myself in a roomful of people I did not really know.
Some subjects can make others really uncomfortable, as you witnessed. As a rule what I share in meetings - and here on the internet - are subjects that I don't mind the whole world knowing because it helps me integrate better and concentrate more on the main topic or Step or whatever the meeting is about. I do give examples but something everyone present might relate to.
I for one understand why when accosted (emotionally physically)/with a topic or event early in sooobriety ....I may not have always been forthright but let me tell you this... the meeting after the meeting Suzanne, Billy P, Jeanie, Loretta and Ron M sure got a earful.....I really needed to understand as a Aussie friend said recently the narrative of my life ....If you do some research on abuse it pretty much portrays later on in life the same symptoms... be it as physical ,sexual, verbal or in Religion's overbearance.abuses. The best thing I found to do with any awareness sober has been to address it quickly and not disregard its impact in the hear and now because if not it lingers sneakily on sobarr in spite of all the recovery Dogma I throw at it ....that appears to make me look(not feel) how well I think I'm doing!
Bravo for the courage to trust...intuitively in wanting to share your truth in hopes of getting your real life back coupled with a more genuine person :))
Oh Alcohol is only a symbol.....I had to get on with a new reality sobarr and Yes! its doable!

Sometimes it is good therapy for people to hear details even if they run away but I am sure others disagree. I don't believe there is any shame in sharing no matter how personal the details. Unless of course, there are minors in attendance.
IMHO
Considering the neighborhood where I grew up most of my friends went through the same thing. We thought that it was normal to get beaten like that.
There is always a good way or a bad way to look at life.
The child abuse had its advantages. I am often called to help a coworker who has to going to a tough neighborhood and face possible violence. I operate very smoothly in violent situations. It's a second nature. I have experienced and seen it all as a child.
You would think that I would have learned not to drink. I was real thick headed.
