Alcoholism is the continued consumption of alcoholic beverages, even when it is negatively affecting your health, work, relationships and life. A theme has emerged at several local AA meetings in the last month locally, people who have gone out and died.
I admit I occasionally forget the stakes.
I sure do not want to die alone, bitter and hurting with a pain only a few can understand. Of course, when and how I die is not my business at this point. But I take comfort in the words, "Rarely have we seen a person fail who has thoroughly followed our path."
Later on that page i read 'We beg of you *with all the earnestness at our command* to be fearless and thorough from the very start."
For the longest time I didn't fully understand the urgency of that sentence ... today I get it.
Just thought I wanted to share.

I can't speak for anyone else but staying sober is a matter of life and death for me. I can't afford not to take my sobriety seriously and for me that means that the top priorities in my life are carrying the message of recovery and practicing spiritual principles in all my affairs.
When I am considering whether I really will go to any lengths and whether i will be fearless and thorough when living my life I have to remember that it isnt just about whether I will feel good or bad, what sort of day I will have, whether things will go my way or not, whether I believe I am doing the right or wrong thing - it is ultimately about whether I will live or die.
When I fully grasped the urgency, as you have, it changed things for me - I was open, honest and willing in a way I had never been before.
Food for thought for everyone who struggles with this disease.

We speak of the alternatives to sobriety - institutions, jail and death. Good thing to remember them...

Thank you for this reminder.
It makes me think of an argument I had with my sisters at the end of my drinking, before I got help.
I had turned my cell phone off when I went to sleep (passed out) at about 7pm one Saturday night and apparently, they had tried to reach me and called each other and got worried.
Next thing I know, I hear my daughter banging on my front door and shouting "MOM!!" because my chain was up and she couldn't get in with her key.
I was furious at them for sending my daughter over (she lives close and they're both about 1-2 hours away) and cussed out my sisters. The look on my daughters face was one of genuine fear. :(
I remember vividly my sister saying "I don't want Jessie to come in and find your cold, dead, drunken body one day!"
That really hit me hard....no one should die that way. No one! I understand the urgency...it could have happened to me, more than once.....
