This group was created to explore various recovery paths for Alcoholism. We generally chose to explore paths outside of the AA model, or ones which incorporate, but are not limited to AA. Ok, I know I've mentioned this program once or twice on here (ahem) at least!

I can't help it - I like it. They have face to face meetings in some states, but they are pretty limited. Here's a link to a schedule of area face to face meetings - hopefully it's a link anyway. If not, copy and paste, if you're interested.

I liked what ldyjane (not sure if thats her exact name) said in an earlier reply about celebrating getting through a struggle. I did that tonight - for some reason it was a rough day, craving-wise. Haven't dealt with those for a while! I'm rewarding myself with a game of online poker while I type this. I journaled (privately, sorry) about it earlier using parts of the above link. Just gets my thinking back on the right track.

There are no meetings in Connecticut. The closest one to us is New Rochelle NY. Darn.

Deb, they have online meetings - although I gotta admit, I never tried one. Check out the toolbox on the site.

I know that meetings are hard to find. I went to one many years ago but it disbanded. Now we have a general non-12-step meeting here in Minneapolis which utilizes several approaches. Maybe someday there will be more such opportunities. If more counselors, like Nopd2day, are willing to direct clients to these alternatives it would help.

Sounds great! Thanks for posting the link. There are a couple of meetings in london although they are at funny times of the day I will definately try to make it to 1. I like the fact that they don't just deal with alcohol as since I have stopped smokng I have gained so much weight its depressing as I am now substituting both alcohol and cigarettes with food and it is really affecting my confidence so I wonder if it might help with that. Also unlike AA they seem to suggest that you may leave one day which I like the sound of being an independent woman and all!

Just a heads up to anyone who found a meeting in your area. You may want to call the phone number first. I found one in Akron, but when I called the number it was disconnected with no forwarding number. Bummer!

I am new to your group and sooo glad to have found you. I believe aa is great for some...but I just didn't get it. I made a decision to quit and I did. PERIOD...I realize that I am not a true alcoholic, atleast not an alcoholic that needs the ridged program that AA offers. I am stay at home mom with adult children...They don't need a stay at home mom anymore, and there are no grandkids yet soooo. I just had too much free time on my hands and I filled it with playing house and drinking...it was fun, until I got big and fat and lazy. No more, I just got tired of it. People sometimes drink out of boredom, I got bored with drinking and have moved on. Thanks all and good luck, we have the POWER to change. I am reading "Alcohol"...how to give it up and be glad you did...by Dr. Philip Tate Ph.D...very good and not an AA. book.

hi jm i live in scotland so going to a person who would charge me for ranting &raving beggars beyond belief i do self punnishment mentaly am i alone here ken from outer hebrides

Well, counseling isn't ALL about the ranting and raving. I got some really good advice, too. I sure do get the whole money aspect of it though. I found someone who really worked with me on the cost. I just know that it really gave me the "push" I needed to make the decision to stop the madness!

Whatever works for you is fine with me -- I was just throwing out some suggestions. The SMART program was one of them, and had nothing to do with the counseling.

To each their own. Just don't give up!
